Sailor's surprise birth while deployed on USS Eisenhower was a rare event. But it wasn't a first.

Word quickly spread around the world this week that a sailor gave birth aboard an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, and for good reason.

Births aboard U.S. warships are rare. Births aboard a ship on a combat deployment are rarer still.

But they’re not unheard of. The Navy does not keep statistics on the number of children born aboard its ships, but archived media reports show this is not the first time a sailor has had a baby at sea or aboard a ship in a combat zone. In one instance, a child died a day after being born in secret and smuggled off the ship so nobody would know about it.

“...The Navy does not keep statistics on the number of children born aboard its ships,....”

You would think that the Navy could keep track of this, even if it involved higher math (two digits).

She was so sure they’d end her deployment if she got pregnant....

I can see future Leyte Gulf, Coral Sea and Midway battles put on hold due to ship board childbirths.

Damn, you'd think she could narrow it down to a dozen or so.

I’m old and tired ladies. But there is not a single one of you I could not take apart in hand-to-hand combat unless you are a UFC fighter or similar. And if I have one of my blades on me, you’d still lose.

But we are putting pregnant women on what are supposed to be warships.

What stupidity.

It’s ridiculous that the personnel on a warship have to deal with this and that the mother endangers herself, her child and potentially others.

The Navy lost 62,614 dead in WWII. The Marines lost 24,511 dead.

Like the Marines, the Navy is designed, intended and funded to fight battles and DIE..................not have babies OR women on board or in the foxhole.

My cardiologist was a Navy Medical Officer in the 60’s.He's told me lots of stories and shown me some photos...including one of him hanging from a chopper being inserted onto a vessel.I'll have to ask him if he attended any births at sea.

Ask any Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief or Master Chief about the impact of co-Ed crews on training, deployment manning and readiness. It has wreaked absolute havoc; just like clockwork, a certain percentage of a ship’s female crew members get pregnant just before deployment, knowing they must be replaced. So, the Navy has to reach into the ranks of shore-based sailors or crews of similar vessels and pull someone to replace the pregnant sailor. So, multiple commands are affected.

Unanswered in this case: is the sailor single? Who is the father and why did she try to hide her pregnancy? In any case, she’s off the ship in the middle of a Persian Gulf deployment and her department is short-handed until they get a replacement. She’s quite a shipmate

I read the article you posted; Good thing I am not in command of that ship, If I were about 2000 sailors would be looking at court martial and a minimum of 5 years at Portsmouth Naval Prison.
