World's oldest snowshoe found on a glacier in Italy's Dolomites

Scientists in Italy’s Dolomite mountains have unveiled what they believe to be the world’s oldest snowshoe.

Carbon-dating has shown that the rudimentary snow shoe, made of birch wood and twine, was made in the late Neolithic age, between 3,800 and 3,700 BC.

“It is the oldest snowshoe in the world so far discovered, dating to around 5,800 years ago,” scientists said in a statement.

It was discovered by chance at an altitude of 3,134 metres (10,280ft) on the Gurgler Eisjoch glacier, close to Italy’s border with Austria.

The ice and freezing temperatures of the glacier had provided “ideal conditions for the preservation of organic material,” the researchers said.

The shoe, which consists of an oval-shaped frame with strands of twine tied across it, was found by Simone Bartolini, a cartographer from Italy’s Military Geographical Institute, who was mapping the border with Austria.

"believe to be the world’s oldest snowshoe" Only until they find the next one, then they will "believe" again. What crap, but at least it was from a British tabloid, often "maybe" more newsworthy than anything in the US.

That’s nitpicking. I’m sure they mean the oldest known snowshoe, rather than the first one ever made by man.

Interesting stuff.

I’ve found spearheads much older, and a clay marble but I have no idea how old it is. Older spearheads are not really a big deal though, plenty of those found in the US over the years.

A snowshoe this old is a big deal, I had no idea people in that era had even thought of snowshoes.

Arrowheads and spearheads may not be a big deal to you, but I’ve never even held one. I think they are a big deal.

I once went to a place near the borders of CA, OR, and NV that had an enormous extrusion of obsidian coming out of the mountain. The vein was so big you could drive a truck all around it. I was told it was a source for arrowheads. I thought it was super cool and brought home a large chunk - maybe someday I’ll chip an arrowhead, I said to myself.

Everyone else thought it was lame. Years later I have a family, and my dad still has a large, shiny rock in his back yard.
