The American National Election Studies, the long-running, extensive poll of American voters, asked voters in 2012 a basic test of prejudice: to rank black and white people on a scale from hardworking to lazy and from intelligent to unintelligent. The researchers found that 62 percent of white people gave black people a lower score in at least one of the attributes.

So, answering the query honestly is racist...got it.

Lincoln had also been a long time advocate of the American Colonization Society’s program of removing blacks from America and establishing them in Africa or Central America.

He supported this program from the 1840s right through the middle of the Civil War. So you can expect that at some point his turn will come to be labeled a racist and exiled to the cornfield right alongside the Confederate Battle Flag.

Milbank is one of those writers who non-stop writes negative pieces about the masses that he doesn’t like or respect.
the only positive is that people like him with that level of negativity usually expire before their time is due.

It is entirely probable that the founding fathers believed their black servants were less intelligent and less industrious than themselves. It’s possible that they were. But that belief was not what made them patriotic, or made America great. It was incidental, not central or the cause for their greatness.

DeTocqueville hit it on the head when he said that slavery dishonors labor, and was thus a hindrance to the progress of the South. He asserts that the educated middle class merchants and artisans who colonized New England were the ones who put the ferment in motion, because they considered religion to be necessary for liberty, and because they had no aristocratic class, and because they believed in hard work. Whatever the original Yankees believed about blacks and their natures was immaterial.

It seems from your original response that patriotism is another word for believing blacks are lazy and stupid, or that believing blacks are lazy and stupid is patriotic. Perhaps you spoke imprecisely, and perhaps you didn’t read the article and therefore mistook its meaning and wrote something not responsive to the actual substance of the article, such as it was. That was what I thought. Please clarify your meaning.

Well Im not sure what youre getting all worked into hives about. By modern definitions “racist” is anyone winning an argument with a liberal. So by correct definition, one would think a much higher percentage would be likely.

If Republicans are such racists, then why did they leave it up to the Democrats to invent the KKK?

The Dems didn’t invent the KKK, they only revived it. Reconstruction gave birth to it, and it thrived briefly as a reaction to Reconstruction, then died and would have stayed forgotten, if not for Birth of a Nation and Woodrow Wilson.

“The Dems didn’t invent the KKK, they only revived it.”

Wasn’t it founded in 1866 by Nathan Bedford Forrest (among others), a DEMOCRAT delegate to the party’s 1868 national convention?

My reply #38 states my meaning clearly. You want to draw me into a discussion of the writer's biases. I am not interested in going there--that is another subject, altogether, than his illogical shortcuts.

My comments were directed not at the writer's biases, which you seem to want to justify; but at his analytic technique, if it can be called that.

If this were a social discussion, and not being something claimed as somehow relevant to the Trump campaign, I would be happy to discuss your historic views. The article, even taking your view of the writer's intention, has in my opinion no relevance whatsoever to the Trump campaign or to American patriotism. (We do not have a litmus test of who agrees with who to define patriotism; although people who cannot stop disparaging other Americans for disagreeing with them, may tempt one to wish we did.)

But he founded the KKK a few years before that. So it would be more accurate to say Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the KKK, later became a delegate to the party’s 1868 national convention. Just another deplorable from the basket, along with Sen. Douglas, who believed that each state should get to choose whether to be slave or free, and predicted that no civil war would result from a house divided against itself (OK. I’m inverting a bit here myself).

I don’t want to even have this discussion with you, let alone draw you into a further discussion. I’ve already covered the author’s illogic. Chiefly, she/he makes the ridiculous leap of logic of saying that 1/2 N (racists) = some of R (Republicans), therefore 1/2 of R = N. You, on the other hand, appear to be saying something else, that N = P (Patriots). I’m sorry, but I don’t endorse that at all, and let’s leave it at that.

The poll itself is racist, requiring that people think of individuals as members of a group and rate those groups on a scale of attributes.

If you tell people to think and act in "racist" ways, don't be surprised or shocked or disapproving if you find them thinking and acting in "racist" ways.

I’m sure she is. Shoot. I know a song about Alabama troopers that’s way more racist than that.
