CAPE KIWANDA, Ore. For years and years, the sandstone pedestal on the Oregon coast was a tourist attraction, a perfect photo-op for its uncanny likeness to a ducks bill.
So when officials found the beloved 7-foot-tall formation at Cape Kiwanda broken into a million pieces, they initially thought age and gravity had done it in.
But then a video emerged that pointed to the true culprit: Vandals. More specifically, a group of people who crossed into the roped-off area and pushed and shoved the rock until it toppled over.
Now, the search is on for the offenders.

IMO it was so unstable, obviously, that it wouldn’t take much more wave action to make it unstable enough for the weight of a small child climbing on it to make it fall. It was dangerous.
I have your answer now about public property. All hail the mighty state!
Comparing that to something rare like a stalactite is ridiculous. The world is full of rock formations. Especially on seashores.
They were trying to push it over, he said. We thought nothing of it. Its sturdy. Its not going to break.
Once the formation began wobbling, Kalas said, he and his friends sprinted over and confronted the group.
They said one of their friends had broken their legs, he said, adding that the group described it as a giant safety hazard.
He said the group claimed that they did a favor by knocking the rock down.
The formation was perched behind a fence in an area the parks department pleaded with visitors not to cross
Exactly! Just what I said. It was a hazard.
A formation like that, delicately perched on a pedestal, is probably as rare as a stalactite. Plus it was in a fenced-in area.

Cape Kiwanda is part of the Three Capes Scenic Route (along with Cape Meares and Cape Lookout). Kiwanda is the smallest of the three, but it is one of the best places to experience spectacular wave action. Pacific City is the home of the Pacific Dory Fleet. South of Cape Kiwanda is the dory boat launching area. North of Cape Kiwanda to Tierra Del Mar is a stretch of beach popular with picnickers. Kiwanda provides great hang gliding and kite flying opportunities.
Important: some cliffside areas of the park are fenced for your safety. Don't cross the fence line. There are great views from the established viewpoints. Beyond the fence, the sandstone cliff edge can crumble without warning. Seven people have died falling into the ocean and onto the rocks since 2009. A special work group made of state and local officials, local businesses and residents, and emergency first responders will meet to discuss and propose action on this issue.

Baloney.
Plus it was in a fenced-in area.
So what? Do you think that's going to keep kids out of there. Do you think ten year olds are more likely to obey those rules than twenty year olds?
So don't jump over the fence and attempt to climb on it!
It was fenced off because the state knew it was dangerous.
So what? Do you think that's going to keep kids out of there.
There are potential safety hazards everywhere. What about train tracks? Kids like to play around those too.
Train tracks aren’t likely to fall over on you when you climb on them.
I guess I’m just too old to understand how emotionally attached snowflakes can get to funny looking rocks.
That rock was "likely" to fall over as the result of some kid climbing on it? It supposedly took about ten 20-year-olds to push it over.
I guess Im just too old to understand how emotionally attached snowflakes can get to funny looking rocks.
Same basic thing can be said for all sorts of natural features within our parks. Sure, we can live without them. They just make life a little more fun and interesting. Well, maybe not for an old sour puss like you.
The perps are probably Oregon State Beaver or Washington Husky football fans. Not a smart thing to do.
I have a shirt that has won as many national football champions as the Ducks. It is quite strange that fans draw attention to this by forming a zero with their hands during sporting events. Ha!
Go Dawgs!
At that angle, surprised the perps weren’t alarmed by the low-flying drone...
Probably too dopey to even notice it.
Odumbo’s people fundamentally changing America
How long would you say, 10 years? 50 years? 100?
When something is fenced off, and someone decides to enter the area anyway and gets injured, the fault is on the person who entered the area.
People get killed at Yellowstone every year, usually because they disregarded the signs and did something stupid. Many of their families have tried to sue, but lost because there are warning signs, and the park cannot be responsible for what people decide to do.
I guess, to your way of thinking, it would be okay to destroy the amazing geographical features of Yellowstone because stupid people manage to get themselves injured or killed on them despite the warnings? People get hurt and killed on Everest--should Everest be bombed into rubble to protect people? It's no big deal, right--mountains are common, and that one is particularly dangerous.
Those people who destroyed the rock should be prosecuted for it. They had no right to do that.
Pinheads without the Zika virus.
I would bet that they were Obama supporters, or at least would say they liked him. I’d also bet that half couldn’t tell you who the VP is.
I would offer that the condition of the rock is not the issue, but rather the mental condition of those who decided that it was their purview to hasten what nature would have taken care of.
If they will do this to natural wonders, they will key the hell out of your car for having a Trump sticker.
Or loot a burning town...
