‘Rolling Coal’ in Diesel Trucks, to Rebel and Provoke (lol)
NY Times ^ | 09-04-2016 | HIROKO TABUCHI

Posted on 09/04/2016 4:48:13 PM PDT by NRx

MONTROSE, Colo. — There is a new menace on America’s roads: diesel truck drivers who soup up their engines and remove their emissions controls to “roll coal,” or belch black smoke, at pedestrians, cyclists and unsuspecting Prius drivers.

Sgt. Chris Worthington of the Montrose Police Department here is out to stop them.

“You can hear those trucks across town, driving like idiots,” he said on a recent Friday evening patrol. He is among the first law enforcement officers in the country to be trained at “smoke school” to pick up the skills to police the coal rollers.

He lost sight of one truck cruising in the opposite direction, trailing plumes of smoke. But another, a Ram 3500 fitted with two steel smokestacks, was parked in a Walmart parking lot. The owner, Pryce Hoey, insisted his truck was emissions compliant, but nevertheless agreed to demonstrate its smoke-generating prowess.

“I just wanted something different,” Mr. Hoey said, revving the engine and releasing two black pillars of smoke into the evening air before Sgt. Worthington shut him down. “People who see it giggle. They think it’s funny.”

Depending on whom you ask, rolling coal is a juvenile prank, a health hazard, a stand against rampant environmentalism, a brazen show of American freedom. Coal rollers’ frequent targets: walkers, joggers, cyclists, hybrid and Asian cars and even police officers. A popular bumper sticker reads “Prius Repellent.”

Really ? I’ll have to look into that. I’m making the plans to put one in my Cherokee. Looking for best firewall clearances and non-turbo behavior.

I would not do more than a 4 cyl Cummins in a cherokee... I am doing the 5.9 swap into a 77 K30, that motor is double the weight of a big block Chevy motor.

If you do not want to go 4bta or 6bta Cummins here is a guy that did a VW TDI. His adapters are quality work.

My 6bta arrived dressed on a pallet marked 1100 lbs. The 4bta is about 800 lbs.

“Protesting against a regime” sounds so much better than “being a jerk to strangers”.

They are democrats. It is not as if they are real, intelligent, sentient human beings. Consider how they have acted for the last 60 years.

They've pretty much used up all my forbearance. Leaving them choking in a cloud of smoke is actually rather tolerant.

Most jerks try to rationalize their jerkish behavior. They’re still jerks.

Ford 550 Superduty’s can have a Cummins.

I broke down in Montrose in July and the Ford Superduty 550 tow truck had a 6.7L Cummins.

We we driving a Miata that sheared a Crank pulley and won a AAA paid 99 mile trip back over the Million Dollar highway to Durango. The adreline rush is lower, but the views are better from 5 feet higher up and not having to worry about driving off a 1000 ft high cliff.

Ironically A Dick in Diesel did try to roll Coal on our miata on Hwy 550, but he couldn’t keep up on the curves and we left him in to pick on Prii that can’t corner like go kart.

Some apparently aim to get other jerks jealous of their jerkishness.

I'm all good with “being a jerk to strangers”. I've an old 7.3 Ford 4x4 that will blot out the sun.
It was close to the top on my bucket list and so much fun to drive.

I had an old non-turbo diesel Rabbit with about 300k miles that had piston blow-by so severe that it would pool engine oil in the air filter case. I learned that if I would rapidly depress and release the throttle pedal, it would suck in the oil through the air intake. It was like an turbo boost that would put out a smoke screen I couldn't see through. It would also prevent the engine from stopping, even when I removed the key.

I distinctly remember letting one tailgater on I-94 have it. They instantly disappeared and when the smoke cleared they were about a 1/4 mile behind! I miss that car.

Well, the strangers with lung issues don’t appreciate it. If I fail to get my vehicle vents closed before going thru one of those black clouds, I can be coughing for 5 minutes.
You know how in the movies where one guy walks up to another and blows his cigar smoke into another guys face just to provoke him? This seems a lot like that to me.

For those folks that like the German diesels. A Mercedes Benz diesel (om617) can be swapped in as well. Less weight of a 6BT.

OK, I won't argue with anyone who says it's juvenile. But I still think its damned funny.

No. It is not funny. In fact, that sort of stupid behavior can actually be dangerous.

Check this one out:

What? Check out what an ass he was?

“Protesting against a regime” sounds so much better than “being a jerk to strangers”.

They are democrats. It is not as if they are real, intelligent, sentient human beings. Consider how they have acted for the last 60 years. They've pretty much used up all my forbearance. Leaving them choking in a cloud of smoke is actually rather tolerant.

Most jerks try to rationalize their jerkish behavior. They’re still jerks.

Last winter I was driving home from work through rural Lancaster County.

It was dark and somewhat foggy and I had to take a detour because the main road I usually traveled on was shut down because of a serious traffic accident. I pulled off into a church parking lot and activated the GPS to navigate my way home.

But that route took me through a series of hilly country roads, some of them very narrow and very winding, I had to cross two one-land bridges and even with GPS, with no street lights and not being familiar, it was a challenge.

As I was driving down one road, I saw what looked like smoke drifting across the road and a strong odor of diesel oil. I thought that someone’s oil furnace had perhaps gone up. But as I went at bit further down the dark road, I saw the tail lights of a large pickup truck in front of me.

Even though I was far behind him, I had never been in front of him as to make him angry that I was not going fast enough, I had not been tailgating him, did not have my high beams on, all of a sudden slowed down, nearly came to a near stop in front of me and then as I got closer, he sped off - “rolling coal”.

Suddenly the road in front of me was pitch black with the thick diesel smoke, so much so as I had to come to a complete stop and wait for it to clear as I feared driving off the side of the road, and the smell of the diesel exhaust, even with my windows shut, made me cough and made me very nauseous.

Why?

As dark as it was, he probably didn’t even know what type of vehicle I was driving – which BTW was an SUV. And he certainly couldn’t have known my political affiliation – I’ve never been a democrat.

The only reason I could think of was he just wanted to be a jerk.

After the smoke cleared, I went on my way and about a two miles further down the road, I passed a house with that pickup (with its two big exhaust stacks) parked in the driveway.

I was so angry that I thought about stopping, keying his truck or putting a screwdriver into one of his tires, but of course didn’t.

But when I got home I thought about getting a custom bumper sticker made and going back late at night and putting it on his truck. It would have said:

“I Roll Coal To Compensate For Having A Very Tiny Flaccid Penis.”

And I don’t think I would have been far off the mark.
