I never said they were. i didn’t address tone. I addressed only the comment that the freeper said that was hosts and guests don’t insult guests. That’s an incorrect statement regardless of the language and tone of roasts now or then.
Read entire article. They obviously piled on Ann, and minus the disclaimers at the end that they really loved her. It appears she was as clever and gutsy as she always is.
And my response to you, again, is that it is unusual at any roast to make a guest the ‘target’—as the thread title states—since the person being roasted was Rob Lowe, not Ann Coulter.
What is it about ‘roasts’ that you don’t understand? Sure, it’s a free-for-all, but it sounds like it turned malicious.
not true all the way back to Jessel. look at the martin roasts when Rickels was a guest. look at the insults heaped on Martin himself.

Roasts can be funny when the person being roasted is actually admired by those roasting him or her. This was not the case which is why it is unfunny.
I think that crude language and scatological comments have greatly degredaded the art. Very few comus are like Seinfield and Cosby (I know) who don’t work dirty. Would be interesting to see Seinfeld host and have a panel which doesn’t work so blue.
