Why crossbows aren't regulated

Regulating crossbows would be expensive and hard to implement, crossbow retailer say

Those convicted of violent crimes are often ordered by the court not to own guns or crossbows, but because there's no regulation of crossbows, retailers don't know who they shouldn't be selling to.

That's why Solomon Friedman, an Ottawa-based firearms law expert, says vendors should be given access to a federal database that identifies those who have a firearms ban.

Although last week's slayings have prompted public discussion about licensing crossbows, Friedman says that the focus should be on those who are already banned from using weapons.

"Instead of spending an enormous amount of money and resources compiling and licensing law-abiding citizens, the government should prepare and distribute something that they already — which is a registry of persons prohibited from [owning] weapons," he said.

Police have access to that information when they pull someone over on the road; when they run someone's licence plate they can learn if the person attached to it has any weapons bans, Friedman said.

"There's no reason why retailers couldn't also just enter a person's identifying information into a web portal and determine instantly whether they're prohibited," he said.

Ryan had firearms ban

Brett Ryan — the man accused of three counts of first-degree murder in the Scarborough attack that left a woman and two men dead, and a third man injured — was banned in January 2009 from owning weapons for at least 10 years. The ban was put in place after he pleaded guilty to 16 charges related to bank robberies, according to court documents obtained by CBC News.

Two of the men died from crossbow bolt injuries to the neck, according to autopsy results made public on Monday. Their mother died from strangulation, police said.

It's unclear whether Ryan owned the crossbow or whether it belonged to someone at the Lawndale Road home where the victims were found last Thursday.

While crossbow deaths are rare in Canada, there was another fatality in Toronto within the past six years....

Sheesh... What next? Former PM Harper got rid of Canada's gun registry and the CBC has been trying to get it re-implemented ever since he did.

Frankly, this makes sense. Just keep a registry of those not legally allowed to own firearms. I’m in IT. The solution with the smallest database is usually the best answer. It also protects those NOT on the list from un-necessary police scrutiny.

here in NY, they just started allowing them during a limited period during deer season - go figure - though there is a limit to the fps...I think it was around 280 fps - theyre fun - a bit cumbersome, but pinpoint accurate out of the box to 30 yds.

There was just an article last week about a triple murder with a cross bow in Europe I think...but that is the only instance Ive ever heard of malevolent use

Crossbows are great for hunting. My Parker Thunderhawk is pretty much their starter model, and it has enough fps and kinetic energy to hunt any North American land animal, including moose, elk, bear. Bolt zips straight through a deer. Made in America too.

In before the first annoying boating accident post.

I suspect that crossbows have more natural buoyancy.

This has been proposed a number of times. The left does not want it ... because... it focuses on people who have committed crimes, and does not inconvenience others.

Alan Korwin has been chamioning this concept for years, as an alternative to NICS.

The gun haters do not want it, because it does not lead to gun registration and gun confiscation.

“The gun haters do not want it, because it does not lead to gun registration and gun confiscation.”

BINGO

Also, crossbows are horribly dangerous to the user. A rifle is far safer.

One slip up on these things, and there are many places to slip up, can cost you a hand or finger instantly. And in order to decock it you have to shoot an actual bolt into a soft target. The ground destroys the bolt. It’s a really inconvenient weapon.

Carrying it in the woods is terrible, they are delicate and just like high powered bows the bolts / arrows have to be perfect. Tiny fractures that the eye can’t detect will blow up literally in your face.

Bows are pretty dangerous too but not as bad as these. A rifle is the safest, easiest to handle hunting weapon out there. I dispel so many myths with my crossbow. (Which is for sale now, BTW)

Are felons allowed to have air rifles? There are some in the 25 caliber and above; serious hunting air rifles.

Crossbows used to be banned for hunting as they were considered a poacher’s weapon. Then George Stevens of Huntsville AR started lobbying for a hunting season and got it.

Now crossbows are considered normal archery equipment.

I remember forty years ago when a former cop murdered his x-wife in Tulsa using a crossbow.

Crossbows are infrequently used in acts of violence.

However, knives are.

Clearly they need to open the gun-ban registry to all sellers of cooking war, cutlery, and even machine tools.
