My great aunt Sister Mary Margarite was a nun, but we called her “Sister.” So what was she? She wore a habit...

My father's sister was a nun, Sister Mary Stephen. She wore a habit when we were kids (back in the 40s). We called her "Aunt Stevie".

That is the way it was. I was born in 1950. They were (are?) different in those days. I have had at minimum 15 different orders of nuns. I think my favorites were the Sisters of Johanna, very sweet. The Sisters of Immaculate Heart, I believe, were all college educated. I could be incorrect on that order.

I went to Matre Dei in Southern California, a big football school. That school had all orders of nuns. The ones with the most clownish headgear were from Spain. They were really nice, though.

We had Priests, Fathers. No Jesuits, Brothers.
