Biohacker Implants ‘Smart Gun’ Key That Can Never be Dropped
GunsAmerica News ^ | Max Slowik | Max Slowik

A Washington-based “biohacker” has created the first implant-activated “smart gun.” A biohacker is a person who experiments with body implants including magnets and in this case, RFID keys. Smart guns use these keys to ensure that only authorized users can shoot them.

The biohacker, Amal Graafstra, has successfully implanted an RFID tag in his hand that serves as a radio-activated safety when it’s in range of his smart gun. It’s a proof-of-concept system to illustrate that it is indeed possible. Graafstra founded and runs his business, Dangerous Things, from home.

Current RFID-based smart gun technology uses wearable tags, such as a ring or bracelet. These pose a problem: because they’re wearable, they can be lost. By implanting the tag in his hand Graafstra has side-stepped the problem entirely.

That said, it’s not as though he isn’t putting new problems on the table. Biohacking, or DIY biology, like smart guns, is also controversial. The hobby exists outside — or at least on the fringe — of medicine and biology. It’s the Internet of Things of body modification.

Even if the system was developed commercially by professionals with full support of the medical and firearms communities — which seems unlikely today — it’ll still be a tough sell.

The article addresses many of the questions and problems of smart gun technology but misses one important point. What if the gun fails when you need it?

What powers the gun RFID pinger? A battery, subject to failure and also electrical connection issues.

Ultimately, there’s a solenoid in there that will need to be tampered with.

The gun still needs a battery that will be dead when needed.

A watch or a ring makes more sense than a chip under your skin IMHO.

So now, instead of merely having his gun stolen he’ll get the added bonus of having his hand cut off at the same time...

“What powers the gun RFID pinger? A battery, subject to failure and also electrical connection issues.”

The implanted RFID is powered by an external source, usually the ‘larger’ device that it communicates with.

NFC, used in cellphones is a type of RFIC. You can use a NFC equipped cellphone to program an NFC tag or label.

For example, you can set up tags near your bed to put it in a ‘quiet’ mode or one in your car to set up Android Auto when you get in.

All you have to do is place the phone ‘on’ the tag.

In other words, “yes.” The gun has the battery to activate the pinger and the action-enabling (or defeating) pin, likely via a solenoid.

No thanks.
Preferred my firearms to be all-mechanical and without delicate electronics.
Pity that they all fell overboard, of course.

Irrelevant, since the point was that there still has to be a power source.

Maybe he should have it implanted in a relatively unimportant finger instead, given the previous comment.

Not irrelevant. I stated where the power source would be.

The government must think we’re that stupid to fall for this bait and switch crap. The guns would fire 20 shots then mysteriously break down. All a manufacturers defect of course.

Within 10 minutes, someone will engineer a way to defeat dumbass ‘smart gun’ technology. No weapon I ever own will use this crap.

It’s irrelevant WHERE the power source is, the argument was that any RFID systems REQUIRES a power source.

The power source would be in the gun itself. Perhaps the battery would only be on if your hand activated a switch.

No, thank you. I have the best SmartGun imaginable. It’s called a “Glock”.

My Glock goes bang every time I pull the trigger. Knowing that means I know to handle it in accordance with NRA safety rules, and my brain makes the Glock as smart a gun as anyone could want. I’ve never had a negligent discharge on the Glock or any other firearm, and I never relax when handling the Glock because I know what it will do. Every time.

I’m working on a new system I call “FIDO”, for Firearm IDs Owner. Voice-recognition activated when you pull it out of the holster. It has no trigger, so bad guys won’t know how to use it.

The firearm senses the owners voice and commands. For example, “Bark” could fire a single shot. “Lay down and roll over” could be a double-tap. “Down Boy!” would fire a burst.

That RFID could be obliterated with a localized wide-band
EMP pulse - essentially disarming the user.

Until somebody chops your implant out and uses it to kill someone else with your gun, convincingly framing you in the process.
