San Francisco's subway has a creative solution to stop its elevators from smelling like urine
Business Insider ^

The so-called "self flush and sanitizing system" is part of a $2 million effort to fight BART's stench problem. The agency also plans to tear up the floorboards of 80 elevators and replace them with a coated material that makes the elevators water-tight. While it may prevent urine from seeping into the machinery, it's unclear whether sealing the urine is the best solution for smell.

If the misting system at Civic Center works, BART wants to install it at other downtown San Francisco and Oakland locations. The work on the floors is expected to be complete in April.

Wow, that’s like a new low. Not only didn’t I properly read the article, I barely read the headline. Elevator cars not train cars. Duh

San Francisco is worse than several poor Third World cities I’ve been to - both dirtier and smellier. A walk down Market Street to the Westfield shopping mall or down to the Metreon subjects one to the smells (and occasional sights) of human waste. However, there are differences - while the Third World cities featured people who were obviously poorer and wearing worse clothing, they did not have people wandering around who were either mentally disturbed or under the influence of hard drugs.

I would like to suggest a neon light transformer, an expanded metal floor above a high voltage grid.

And pay per view security cameras.

electrify the floors of any problematic area

Yep, the obvious deterrent - our friend the electron. :-)

How about some public restrooms?

Last time I was in SF, a couple came up to me on Market Street somewhat inebriated. The woman asked me if I knew where there was a restroom. Being from out of town I had no idea, other than the obvious possibilities. I suggested the nearby StarBucks, but she already knew that StarBucks had closed for the night.

Then she erupted, “I HATE this f***ing city! There’s no place to pee!”

Better solution: mental hospitals.

I suggest slightly electrifying the floors...

that way when some homeless creep pees on them... they get a shocking surprise!

hehe

LOL, I think FReepers have more common sense than just about any other group. We could have ended this problem in days.

I love all the solutions offered here. But San Franciscans haven’t been sleeping on the job. They came up with the idea of an open air urinal. Why pee in guilt in the dark when you can pee freely and unashamedly out in the open?

You go to ace, or amazon, and get a dog zapper generator. Then you plug it in with a low foil near where the floor meets the wall (natural aim point), Most will learn on the first "take" not to pee in the elevator.

Low cost, low maint, long term correction.

What is not to like?

Just put in uni-sex urinals in the stations. Right out next to the tracks. And a couple of those squat toilets, too. And a hose.

That’s a much cheaper, culturally-correct solution for San Fransicko.

My uncle once worked in a building located in New Orleans' French Quarter. They had a problem with the homeless and hood rats pissing through the mail slot on the front door. The old, brass mail slot.

The electrical engineer types in the office suggested that they put plastic bushings on the flap and electrically insulate it from the surrounding frame - and they did. Connecting a car battery to the flap and frame, they set up their surprise. Sure enough, the next morning there were chunks of burned skin stuck to the mail slot. Problem solved.

:-)

Absolutely correct. Guilt over urinating in public is obviously a holdover from our repressive heritage. Federally funded studies to follow. /s

Install something in the floor like those sheets that ring alarms when children wet the bed. Only instead of an alarm, it triggers a disinfectant spray. Solves two problems. Possibly three if it acts as a deterrent.

How about a camera in every elevator, several people on watch 24/7 and a cop waiting to arrest the perp when he/ she steps out of the door? That won't cost much!
