UPDATE: ROME, Aug 24 (Reuters) - The earthquake that struck central Italy on Wednesday has killed at least 159 people, the country's civil protection agency said, raising a previous count of 124.
The search for bodies is continuing through the night, authorities said.
EARLIER STORY: An earthquake flattened towns in central Italy in the early hours of Wednesday, killing at least 120 people and burying some alive in their sleep, with volunteers and firefighters racing to free those trapped under mounds of rubble as darkness fell.
The quake razed mountain homes and buckled roads in a cluster of communities some 140 km (85 miles) east of Rome. It was powerful enough to be felt in Bologna to the north and Naples to the south, each more than 220 km from the epicentre.

Prayers for those still alive that they get rescued.
Too heartbreaking to read. No family up there. That’s pretty far north.
How horrific. Dont remember the last time Italy had a bad quake.
Strange because the New York Times had an article last weekend on the continuing weakening of The David in Florence. The article spoke about future earthquakes and three days later - here it is. I haven’t heard anything about the statue in these reports.
This town is in very mountainous country and is quite a ways from Florence, so I don’t think it should have affected the David.

AND IT's FREE !
I was wondering. It’s just so ironic that the article came out and then wham!
I love Italy and mourn the dead.
If King Putt the Fagnificent had been golfing in Italy when this happened, he’d simply play around the rubble and dead bodies
Florence is in another part of the country. This was nearby to Rome, although they probably felt it a little all over the country. I was a couple hundred miles away in Verona when the 6.1 quake that hit Bologna a few years ago shook me awake in bed. It depends on the depth and type of movement.
If the bedrock is fragmented by numerous other faults, it can limit the range of tremors, too.
This one must be one for the books because many of the buildings destroyed were 100s of years old.
I love Italy too. It’s amazing how fast the land changes when you go up into those mountains.
Fascinating! Thanks.
Trying it out now. Cool!
