Puzzled — and upset.
That’s how some women working in the Islamic fashion industry view the furor in France over burkinis, the body-concealing swimsuit that has been banned in a growing number of seaside towns.
“I am quite upset to say the least. Wearing a burkini is not a political statement, rather a choice of dress,” said Rabia Zargarpur, a Dubai-based designer who markets her Rabia Z label of so-called modest fashions online. “For Muslim women, burkinis are a symbol of liberation, not repression. Muslim women who were uncomfortable or unable to swim in mixed pools or beaches are now taking part in those activities. And women can wear a wetsuit with a hood for multiple reasons including preserving modesty or sun protection.”

Most women will choose something comfortably in the middle. How about giving them the freedom to make up their own minds without government deputizing modesty enforcers?

But one could argue there’s nothing wrong with going to the beach totally nude. But most coastal areas (and cultural norms) will not allow it.

No. No freedom to wear enemy uniforms that can conceal bombs or whatever at the beach. And France gave us the bikini, I don’t want the beaches taken over by moslems that ruin it for everyone else. Women in burkinis will attract aggressive moslem men who will bother normal women. Close to 500 people dont agree with you. They’re dead.
Ok then. Any other freedoms you would like to see curtailed? Maybe we can prohibit women from driving since they may be steering a car packed with explosive substances.
