A federal judge on Monday refused to issue a preliminary injunction in the lawsuit by three University of Texas professors who do not want legal concealed carry in their classes.
With the states new campus carry law taking effect this month, the professors kept a promise of litigation and filed suit in federal court in July seeking a federal injunction on campus carry naming Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, UT President Gregory Fenves and members of the schools Board of Regents in their official capacity, as defendants.
Paxton, in response, filed paperwork in opposition to the professors action earlier this month, calling the suit frivolous and the law constitutionally sound.
Now, with classes set to begin for the 2016 Long Session on Wednesday, the court has declined to lend enough merit to the professors argument to warrant blocking campus carry while the case unfolds.
It appears to the court that neither the Texas Legislature nor the Board of Regents has overstepped its legitimate power to determine where a licensed individual may carry a concealed handgun in an academic setting, wrote U.S. District Judge Earl Leroy Yeakel III, a UT alumni who was appointed to the bench in 2003 by President George W. Bush, in his ruling Monday.

The faculty members, three female liberal arts professors whose classwork sometimes touches on controversial subjects such as abortion and unwanted pregnancies, argue the carry of guns in their classes will chill discussion, thus hindering their right to free speech.
Reminds me of this meme.
The idiot "professors" probably think that the "gun-toting" conceal/carry students will shoot them if they receive a poor grade.

Maybe those “controversial” profs will think twice before insulting everyone who disagrees with them?
I wish California would be like Texas.
...have decided that a woman's Right To Choose doesn't include self-defense.
"Open Carry Texas pointed out the UT shooting was partially suppressed by armed students on campus who loaned cops their guns..."
Wait, what?
The question of what happens when two groups of armed people who each think the other group is crazy and dangerous come together was answered at the Republican Convention: there were no incidents involving New Black Panthers and delegates.
Ya gotta love The Lone Star State!
I hadn't heard about anyone loaning the cops a firearm, although one might suppose that a patrolman showed up packing only a revolver and could have been loaned a rifle by a civilian/student.
I've also heard that the civilians (students) shooting at Whitman contributed to taking him down, keeping him pinned down and... I think I heard, wounding him, which was helpful to the cops running up the stairs of the bell tower.
I'm sure someone will come along to clarify this; I wasn't 10 years old yet when this happened.
They’re not “your” classrooms. They belong to the taxpayers.
L
That’s referring to the 1966 UT “Massacre” where students loaned their rifles to cops to take down the tower sniper.
They should just move to New York.
Or some other Libtard controlled state.
I read an article many years ago by the guy who is sometimes given credit for taking Whitman. He late became a Texas Ranger.
His story was just about exactly what you posted.
Please add me to the 2A ping list. Thanks.
What that actually equates to is “Keep HONEST guns out of our classrooms.” Dishonest ones won’t care or stop if they are banned.
I remember that day and reading the articles on it later. An armed civilian (rifle I believe) went up the stairs to the top with a cop. The top is like a guardhouse with a walkway all around it. The men went in opposite directions around the guardhouse. The cop saw the perp first and took him out.
Now I have to go read up and see if my memory is at all accurate.
I wish California would be like Texas.”
Unfortunately, seems to some of us like parts of our state are getting to be like California as quickly as the outsiders can make it happen.
Stay Strong Grams A. Keep Texas Great
Yep, a civilian was involved as were 3 cops. Houston McCoy seems to have fired the fatal shots with a 12 gauge. The civilian, named Crum, had an accidental discharge on the walkway, which caused Whitman to look in that direction. McCoy and Martinez got the shots off at Whitman.
Civilians with rifles were credited with slowing Whitman down by harassing him with fire.
14 dead, 32 wounded, some as far away as 1,500 feet.
Whitman had a brain tumor, like Hillary.
