A friend of mine sets the start of the descent as the 1960s. He’s probably right. I put the beginning of the end MUCH earlier, with the creation of the income tax, creation of the federal reserve, and universal suffrage. These enabled the massive growth of the federal government, culminating in the creation of the welfare/warfare state of the 1960s.
