91-year-old man fights back, shooting suspected armed robber in neck

EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WJBK) - An elderly shopper pulls out his gun and fires in a Rite-Aid parking lot.

The 91-year-old told police he thought he was about to be robbed by a man who followed him from his car toward the store. That shopper is 91-years old and he says he gave that man a warning -- before he shot him. Now the suspected robber is in custody.

Likely just another morning for the elderly Eastpointe man who stopped by this Rite-Aid store at Gratiot and Nine Mile Monday.

"He was trying to get into the store when he was approached by the suspect," said Deputy Chief Eric Keiser, Eastpointe police.

Eastpointe police say the 91-year-old man felt uneasy as the suspect began acting erratically. That's when police say the elderly man told the 30-year-old suspect -- who pointed some sort of weapon at him -- that he had a license to carry.

"The person who fired the shots had a CPL and was lawfully carrying a handgun," said Keiser. "He said he defended himself when he was attacked."

I believe every person over 60 should have a concealed carry firearm. Once that hair goes grey, it is like a blue light special going of at K-mart. Eastpoint renamed some years ago to get out of the Detroit shadow. Eastpoint was (is?) mostly an older white community. Detroiters threw a racist tantrum, but Eastpoint prevailed. The school system is still called East Detroit school system.

No, not so dramatic as that, but it’s beginning to move that way. Eastpointe was an overwhelmingly White suburb until recently, although that is changing with a lot of Blacks exiting Detroit proper for the close-in suburbs since the ‘90s. In 2000, Eastpointe was 92% White and 5% Black, but by 2010, it was 66% White and 30% Black. So it will likely be Black majority within the next decade if that shift continues.

East Saint Louis, by comparison, has been Black for about a half-century and is now completely depopulated of Whites (only about 1% as of 2000).

I know the area where that man defended himself very well. We used to cruise Gratiot ave. all the time in the 70's, And it is Eastpointe now because they changed the name to disassociate themselves from Detroit years ago. There is a very nice Italian restaurant named Salvatore Scaloppinnes on that very corner in that mall area. The Eastpointers wanted to rub figurative elbows with the Grosse Pointers.

For those interested, this happened on Nine Mile and Gratiot, while on 8 mile and Gratiot there is a White Castle we used to frequent late at night in my buddy’s Road Runner.

Part of that is due to white flight. The blacks who move into white areas early on tend to be better educated and employed, not the troublemakers. But many whites don't bother to find out what kind of neighbors they'll be before plugging in the "for sale" sign.
