BRONZEVILLE — After another brutally violent weekend in Chicago, Police Supt. Eddie Johnson appeared impatient and exasperated Monday as he renewed his plea for judges and legislators to help keep repeat gun offenders off the streets.
"Any leader in the city of Chicago that thinks what we're seeing out on the streets is OK, shouldn't be a leader," Johnson said, his voice swelling. "Go to those neighborhoods and live there, and tell me how you feel then."
Those killed over the weekend included 23-year-old Abner Garcia, an Army veteran with no criminal history, and 19-year-old Arshell Dennis, a college student whose father was a police officer. On Sunday, a 6-year-old girl became the third child under 10 to be shot in the past week, and a pregnant woman was shot in her chest.
"Too many Monday mornings we come together as a city and shake our heads in despair and disbelief," Johnson said. "The truth is that as long as we fail to hold violent repeat offenders responsible for their actions, we're going to hear the same stories of murders and shootings in certain parts of our city.
"I, for one, am just tired of it, and I'm sick of seeing our African-American men robbed of an opportunity for a prosperous future," he added.
Of the 52 people shot between Friday morning and Sunday night, police said, 40 had prior contact with police. Together, they had 672 arrests on their records.

Guess there’s no reason to consider the White House or the DOJ (both Holder’s DOJ and Lynch’s) or Chicago’s City Hall as part of the problem - if not THE problem.
Surprised the kneepad media hasn’t tried to blame a Confederate Battle Flag or some other nonsense (well, blaming the CBF is nonsense to everyone except Nikki Haley).
Actually, a couple of years ago, a guy at Yale did a study on Chicago GSW recipients, and found that upwards of 90%, call it one standard deviation in the sample, had been co-arrested with at least one other person in the previous five years, for stuff along the lines of B&E, burglary, etc.
Back in 1993/4 the statistic I saw showed that 63% of murder victims had criminal records
Cops have told me they arrest the same thugs repeatedly, only to see them sprung again and again by a revolving door justice system.
This has a negative effect on morale and contributes to cop stress.
Explains why some cops go dirty—in cahoots with drug dealers—and some go postal.
The better the local militia (which by and large is people OTHER than cops — the cops generally come around mainly to clean up, it being rare for them to actually catch someone in flagrante delicto), the more the problem with career crime is suppressed.
Yes! Let Chicago issue weapons to anyone who is even semi-honest (nothing worse than a misdemeanor in 5 years), copy Florida’s make-my-day laws, and say guys, take care of it yourselves. There would be a spate of self defense killings (not talking about the kind of thing going on in the PI, but self defense) but then Dodge City would be a lot cleaner and safer.
And the police themselves would have a much easier job.
What could they possibly lose in Chicago if they changed their voting habits (the cemetery group also)?

The way to change the numbers for the better is to begin counting on saturday morning
There are so many dark secrets in the justice system its dismaying.
Especially when the judges who have the ability to sentence people to long periods of time, in essence, remove them from society so they can longer prey on the innocent or the unwary, let these animals go again, and again, and again. Until finally, they murder someone and then they have to go sit. Then they only do ten years and are back out again to murder again.
And clone themselves with which willing female they can find.
Judges are responsible for the continued crime.
