Precisely Laz. The 5.56 has a longer leade. The leade is the part of the barrel immediately in front of the chamber where the bullet travels before engaging the rifling.
Bad things can happen if you try to fire 5.56 through a .223 barrel.
The type of barrel you have should be roll stamped on the barrel.

As an aside, I remember that many years ago, somebody showed up at a Star Trek convention with a homemade “phaser”, which was a 5 Watt laser in a phaser housing, connected to a large battery. He bragged that it could easily burn through a cinder block.
They wisely refused to let him in with it.
This happened before lasers became very regulated. However, more recently, somebody noted that many ordinary green light lasers had a ‘limiter’ chip that could be deactivated with a soldering iron, making them strong enough to ignite paper or burn skin.
The only question is “HOW MANY SHOULD YOU OWN?”
Fabrique National (FNC) came out with a 5.56mm carbine to replace the M-4 (SCAR-L) and a larger variant in 7.62mm (SCAR-H). These use a gas-piston system instead of a direct gas impingement of the M-16/M-4. It runs cooler and cleaner, but it’s heavier, more complex and more expensive. Special Operations units have adopted them is some quarters.
You can find AR 15’s for $599 if you search gun dealers in other states running sales. I saw discounts of $289 and $325 on AR 15’s from a dealer in AL. I have bought from this dealer and paid 50 bucks to transfer the weapon to an in state dealer.
Thanks man. I have to admit I enjoyed the M4 more than the SCAR. But since I know nothing of battle and tactics i am sure the reasons you gave (cooler and cleaner) make it a superior gun for certain situations.
