”ALL BY MYSELF”

In 1983, in this “Evening at Pops” episode, Steve Lawrence sang, backed by John Williams and the Boston Pops. He put his own brand on this classic.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

”LAZY”

This 1924 song was introduced to the world by a “belter” even though electric recording had made it possible for a crooner to sing it. Note that Irving was still working in the intro-and-chorus format from a few decades earlier. Also note that the bass lines were still played on a tuba.

Al Jolson: “Lazy”

”LAZY”

This tune was not ignored during the Big Band era. It was used in “Holiday Inn,” the 1942 film that introduced “White Christmas” to the world. Note that the intro has been forgotten.
