The "regrets" meme, which will play through the weekend, I expect. And another meme suggested by the "Politico Caucus" concludes that the Trump campaign, and it's hire of Bannon in particular, is on the wrong track.

GOP insiders: Trump's overhaul won't succeed

Roughly a third of Republican respondents say the addition of Bannon and promotion of Conway will make things worse. ...

"There is no way to right this ship," said one New Hampshire Republican ...

Nearly a half-dozen GOP insiders compared the changes to "rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic" - a reference to Trump's significant deficit in the polls.

A Virginia Republican made a similar analogy: "You can keep moving people in and out of the car, but so long as the drunk guy is driving it while blindfolded, the ride probably isn't going to get any smoother."

"The problem was never the organization, or obvious lack thereof. The problem has always been Donald," said an Iowa Republican. "He lost the election the day he descended down the escalator. There is no pivot, no second act, and no path to the presidency that runs down the road of racism and incendiary intolerance. He chose that road when he chose birtherism ...

"This is one of Trump's biggest flaws," said a Michigan Republican. "He has missed so many opportunities to hammer home the questionable dealings of the Clinton Foundation, as well as Clinton's home brew email server, by failing to run a disciplined, professional campaign. Instead, we hear about Paul Manafort's Ukraine ties."

I wonder how many of the Politico Caucus are Freepers.

"What does he regret, exactly?" is going to be the question for the next few news cycles, and will be used as an opportunity for each of the offended persons to weigh in, and either call Trump's remarks a non-apology (true enough), or to otherwise reject the remark.

Yes, you’re right. It won’t be pretty in the lamestream media after those words of conciliation. But have no fear, the truth is getting out and having an effect. The Charlotte speech was terrific and many will tune in on youtube to see the whole speech after hearing of this small comment of Mr. Trump’s. IMHO.

No fear here! Trump, whether he is following some carefully laid out plan or is substantially "winging it," has the chops and the temperament and (I think) the blessing of God in this race.

Not that the country deserves a reprieve, but it is going to get one!

CNN, "How does 'regret' fit into his rebooted campaign?" The brains of CNN morning show (Cuomo) is out. We get Alyson Camerota and Poppy Harlow, who I am not familiar with, but assume she is the typically dishonest media hack.

Thanks for the take on CNN - because I won’t watch them for 1 second.

Anonymous establishment types writing Trump off.

Nothing new here. They’ve been doing that since last summer.

LOL! Soviet Red Hampshire (spit!) 'Republican' is called a 'Democrat' in the south and the heartland. RINO filth, at best.

Right. Yesterday’s rally was a hit out of the park for Mr. Trump. Hopefully today’s rally will be just the same or better.

Not the first one, but the second one on NYT - first to articles are anti-Trump. And then there is not very much more about the election.

Incredible, two major policy speeches about Law and Order and how to combat terrorism, but the addition of people in the campaign is what the news is all about.

This is the problem - the foreign policy speech was excellent, but it was Trump's "Obama and Clinton are founders of ISIS" that managed to penetrate past the tittle tattle of the MSM.

Yesterday, when he discussed the PC issue, he finished with a sentence that seems totally forgotten now, but actually says all about the present day media climate:

Trump: "Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these [petty - PC] issues."

But of course that is almost all that is discussed these days. I happened to watch CNN the day after Melania Trump's address to the convention. I had difficult not burst out in laughter - all these pompous "experts" talking about something completely irrelevant. I don't know how quickly it will happen, but looking at the figures of readers and viewers it is already happening. The liberal media is on its way to total irrelevance.

BTW - last comment. have to finish - did anyone watch Newt on Hannity? Not only did he come out with a clear prediction that Trump was going to win. He also believes the media polls are totally skewed. Note, not intentionally by the pollsters, but because the constant barrage of anti_trump propaganda has made it much harder for people to divulge that they are actually going to vote for Trump.

I think he is right. Given the low response rates, it needs only a slight increase of non-response among the Trump-supporters to totally skew the polls.

One did not see this (in the end at least) in 2012, but the propaganda was not quite as vicious, and also in the end Romney caved in. I don't see any indication tat Trump will do that.

The GOP “insiders” are still feeling butt hurt I see. When Donald Trump descended that escalator a year ago last June, their fates were sealed. They remind me of high school backup quarterbacks. Bitter over not being selected as starter, they root against their own team and for the starting quarterback to fall on his face.

Last night I watched a speech by Ronald Reagan given from Liberty Island (NJ) on September 1, 1980 overlooking New York harbor and the Statue of Liberty.. It was the official kickoff for the fall campaign and Reagan was still behind in the polls. The media second guessed him for wasting his time in a Democrat stronghold. Two months later, Reagan swept the Northeast to the shock of all the pundits and an overall landslide victory.

Watching that rally - easily found on YouTube - it seemed very similar to the way DT is campaigning today. I remember seeing clips of that rally on the evening news all those years ago. I was just 18 years old and getting ready for basic training on Parris Island. “Sailing” by Christopher Cross was all over the radio and even today, that song brings me back to the late summer of 1980 and the optimism of candidate Reagan,

The press reaction is so predictable.

I think the most powerful part of last night's speech, in terms of moving the electorate, was "What have you got to lose?" Directed to the ghetto community, that challenge has power. It won't move the #NeverTrumpists, who are willing to lose SCOTUS to the liberals, but I think it has real power to the low/zero information poor voter.

They really are a reprise of the most excellent Baghdad Bob program.

I did not see Newt on Hannity, thank you for the report. The polls are going to shift, and there is no doubt in my mind that Trump knows, like the back of his hand, that in order to win the presidency, he has to look like a president. He will transform his presentation from the heavy in "The Apprentice," to "Mr. President," which I think is the real Mr. Trump. He uses his actor persona to get attention, and once he has your attention, he transforms. The press will say (as usual) that the real Mr. Trump is phony, and the actor is the real person. Some people will be fooled, but more than enough will (correctly) find him to be genuine.

I’m totally lost here as I didn’t get to hear the speech. What is this regret thing all about?

Trump voters like me, will not answer the phone if they don’t recognize the caller.

Take a face to face poll on the street.
