Idea of a Trump White House leaves Germany angry and anxious (barf)
CNBC ^ | 08/18/2016 | Elizabeth Schulze | Everett Rosenfeld

Eight years ago, a U.S. presidential candidate named Barack Obama captivated hundreds of thousands of cheering supporters at Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate with a promise to tear down walls between races and nations.

Over the last year, however, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has provoked ire from German quarters after repeatedly disparaging the country.

On Monday, Trump sought to insult Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton by comparing her to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, saying incorrectly that crime had skyrocketed under Germany’s refugee policies. Those comments, and others, have left Germans — from the highest pinnacles of business to the grungiest parks — transfixed on the U.S. presidential election.

Unlike in 2008, many report confusion and fear in the face of a candidate who vows to build a wall and shut out allies if he wins the White House in November. …

The nation that elected a fatuous clod like Merkel can STFU.

Say, maybe they can pull out of NATO and join Turkey in a new alliance: The European Caliphate!

What is extremely galling is that this piece is written by two people with Jewish names. Have they never opened a history book?

Those are not necessarily Jewish names. There’s a town called Rosenfeld in Baden-Württemburg, and “Schulze” refers to a town magistrate.

The Germans should have been nuked in WW2.

The bomb became available about the time or shortly after Germany surrendered.

Snopes get something wrong again?

FWICS, Fred Trump Sr.’s original last name was “Trumpf”.

Can't be bothered with Snopes.

But the Wikipedia says:

Trump has said that he "feels Scottish" and he is also "proud" of his German heritage, having served as grand marshal of the 1999 German-American Steuben Parade in New York City.[7][8] Drumpf, the family’s ancestral name, was changed to Trump during Germany's Thirty Years' War in the seventeenth century.[9]

So, yes, Fred, well before he arrived on our shores, went by Trump. But the old-country original name was nevertheless Drumpf. I wonder, how does that sound to Angela's ears? Which is more krautisch, Trump or Drumpf?

Not according to the Wikipedia article on Donald T.’s grandfather, which cites it as “Trumpf”.
In 1885, at age 16, (Frederick) Trump emigrated from Bremen, Germany, to the United States aboard the steamship Eider, departing on October 7 and arriving at the Castle Garden Emigrant Landing Depot in New York City on October 19. U.S. immigration records list his name as “Friedrich Trumpf”, last place of residence as “Kallstadt”, country of birth as “Germany”, and his occupation as “farmer”. …
The claim for the ancestral name being “Drumpf” rather than “Trumpf” comes from a book written by one Gwenda Blair, titled The Trumps: Three Generations of Builders and a Presidential C candidate, whose first edition apparently came out in 2001 and I have not heard of until now.

I agree, it was unfortunate Fat Man wasn't ready in time for the European theater.

But at Los Alamos, they shipped no bomb before its time.

BTW, if the Japs hadn't surrendered, the Third Shot was scheduled for the 19th.

As I wrote, Fred went by Trump.

But he had ancestors named Drumpf, which they changed during the Thirty Years' War, 1618-1648, a long time before Fred Trump's time.

The question for today is, would the ascendancy of DJT to the American presidency be more offensive to today's Krauts if they knew he came from one of theirs, named Drumpf (or Trump). Hopefully, the answer is ja wohl! That's Schadenfreude on my part. Schadenfreude = ramming down their throats!

They are skeptical in keeping with human nature and with their one-sided exposure to American politics but they will give a fair hearing, at least as open-minded and perhaps more open-minded than one encounters here.

I know that I was was just musing and wishing that the bomb was ready before that time, as The Reich was as deserving of that “rain of ruin” every bit as much as Imperial Japan was.

I’m pretty sure they have a temporary tatoo for that.
