Untouched-by-Media Presidential Poll at Iowa State Fair Has Trump WAY Up (56-44%, 24k-19k)

Casting corn kernels may not be the most scientific method of presidential polling, but it still reveals some voter preferences in the battleground state Iowa.

Attendees at the Iowa State Fair have been able to cast their vote in the 2016 presidential race by placing corn kernels in a jar at the WHO-HD TV News booth. On the fair’s fifth day, the results so far gave Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump a lead with 56 percent over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who has received 44 percent of the kernels so far.

Polltakers are able to see the results amass before their eyes in clear jars placed on a table. The 12-point lead by Trump came from 24,284 votes. Clinton had 19,418 votes, according to WHO-HD 13.

The unscientific poll has been conducted at the fair for the past decade

How have past GOP candidates done? Does the fair crowd skew Republican (people who own their own farm vs. fraudulently voting illegals who get hired as day laborers; farm folk vs city folk)? I wouldn’t be shocked to find out core Democratic groups don’t participate in 4H as much as Republicans.

I believe Hillary will be lucky to get 60 million votes, Trump will outpace Romney and get closer to 65 million for the win. That would be 52% of the vote for Trump. Republican primaries turnout was 30 million WAY up, Dumbocrats WAY down. Primaries are excellent representation of predictive turnout of the general election.

The fair must not take EBT cards.

Right, I assume the state fair attracts a more conservative crowd.

Mitt Romney beat Barrack Obama by 10 at the fair, but lost Iowa by 6. But I’m still hopeful, because I think this time out, the enthusiasm might be stronger for Trump.

Also a good sign: After 11 days in 2012, 72,000 votes were cast. This has 44,000 votes cast after 5 days. Looks like there’s more enthusiasm among a Republican-leaning crowd.

Yes and Trump can maintain it. Romney took a powder for much of October, and he’s not Trump.

Yes. For raw numbers: In 2008, the Democrats outdrew the Republicans, 35.5 million to 20 million. And the Republican participation fell even further in 2012. In 2016, the Republicans just about tied the Democrats in turnout at 30 million, which represents a large drop for the Democrats since 2008.

Sure, you could argue that some of the turnout was prompted by anti-Trump voters, but Trump’s supporters alone still out-numbered the top TWO vote-getters in 2008 or 2012. Or that Trump had 42% more voters than Romney or McCain, while Clinton had 4% fewer than she had last time when she lost, despite winning with 55% this time.

As a lifelong Iowa resident, I would caution against getting too excited about this.

Iowans who go to the fair are not like those who vote. Far from it. The demographics are way off. The rural-to-city folks ratio is extremely skewed, with the city dwellers vastly underrepresented.

(No one trolls the inner city with cigarettes and malt liquor to entice the folks to hop on the bus and go to the FAIR to vote for Democrats.)

LOL, true. But inner city is not going to come out like they did for Obama, and last poll I saw showed Trump getting an amazing 14% of the black vote. So we can hope !!

Not surprised Romney finished ahead of Obama last year.

The positives I still take away are:

1. Trump is slightly outperforming Romney

2. At this time last year, Romney was polling competitively with Obama. This year, the media polls say Trump is getting trounced, but these results suggest that may not actually be the case
