Cubs Apologize After Playing ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ for Accused Domestic Abuser
New York Magazine ^ | August 15, 2016 | Gabriella Paiella

For some reason, playing a song in which 50 percent of the lyrics are the exact phrase “smack my bitch up” for an accused domestic abuser didn’t quite sit right with people, leading the Cubs to issue the following formal apology:

"The selection of this track showed a lack of judgment and sensitivity to an important issue. We have terminated our relationship with the employee responsible for making the selection and will be implementing stronger controls to review and approve music before public broadcast during our games."

It’s one of those “don’t try this at home” things.

“...what if the abuser played for the opposing team?”

I don’t know if this story hubby told me will come across correctly but I’ll try.

The hockey player Dennis Potvin was accused of beating his wife and it made the news. His team was playing the Rangers in Madison Square Garden. To taunt him the crowd chanted: Beat Your Wife, Potvin, Beat Your Wife.

He was punished and served his 30 game suspension. Doesn’t he have a right to mend his life? Besides, he throws it over 100 MPH, with accuracy.

50 percent of the lyrics are the exact phrase “smack my bitch up”
*****************
I did the math and “smack my bitch up” constitutes 57.14% of the lyrics.

If you have kids, never take them to an English Premier League soccer game.

...the point of the song is music to dance to, and it’s very good at that.

If you say so.
And, yes, I looked up the tune on Youtube. Nerve jangling. Made me want to slap several people up.

Whatever happened to the stadium organist playing organ music between innings??

Maybe because they would like a demographic younger than 80. There is a great scene from the movie "Parental Guidance" that explains this perfectly. Billy Crystal is an aging minor league baseball announcer that gets fired for being to old school.

Artie gets fired

Well, if these sports teams want a demographic younger than 80, what are we saying? We’re saying they need to blast all of our eardrums with loud rock music?? The younger people won’t go to a baseball game just for the appreciation of baseball; they need a constant soundtrack?? IN many stadiums, a soundtrack which is so loud you can’t talk to the people next to you?

How does this make sense, in that, if you gain some youngsters who won’t go to a game otherwise, but you lose hard core fans such as myself???

Sadly, it seems that young people today need a hard-rock/rap/disco sound track for everything including clothing and shoe stores, restaurants where the music is so loud you can’t converse, and even churches, where electric guitars and drums are chasing away choirs and organs.

Yep, I hear you. Pun intended as we’re talking about loud music.

What is it with some shopping malls and stores with this music also???

I have stopped going to a certain mall in my area, which always had this loud thump/thump/thump soundtrack playing.

How about bring back elevator music???

Or no soundtrack at all???

Or if they insist on music, how about Frank Sinatra or Perry Como music???? Or will that drive the youngsters away??

Then again, some of the people at these malls don’t appear to be spending any money. You wonder if mall operators really want these people as their main customer base.
