Hillary Clintons breakout moment at Wellesley College By Frances Stead Sellers and Marilyn W. Thompson
Hillary Clintons moment of glory at Wellesley College came when she mounted the stage at her commencement ceremony and took on a powerful Republican U.S. senator, culminating four years of what her campaign now describes as social-justice activism on the burning issues of the time.
But the story not yet told is how out of character Clintons inflammatory Wellesley speech was. At a time when the country was questioning the system, Clinton was known for working squarely within it. She was a conciliator, not a bomb thrower.
On graduation day, the onetime Goldwater Girl reinvented herself as a provocative voice speaking for her angry generation. With the national media closely following campus upheaval that spring, Clinton stole the spotlight by rebuking a Washington symbol she had helped elect. She undercut Wellesleys president, once her ally in tamping down campus unrest.
Clintons remarks transformed her, virtually overnight, into a national symbol of student activism. Wire services blasted out her remarks, and Life magazine featured her photo, dressed in bold striped bell-bottoms. Clinton soon caught the attention of leading figures of the left, including civil rights activist Vernon Jordan and her future mentor, Childrens Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman, and by the fall, when she entered Yale Law School and met her future husband, Bill, her name was well known.

"Wire services blasted out her remarks, and Life magazine featured her photo, dressed in bold striped bell-bottoms."
She was a total unknown. I never heard of her until her husband ran for president, and I have family and friends who intersected her circles in several different ways. She was no “national” figure, she was simply a student who got into Yale Law School and who gave her undergraduate commencement address.
Nobody ever heard of Hillary until she was the wife of the Governor of Arkansas. Probably not until she was First Lady. What a load of bilge.
How low of a moral scuzzball do you have to be to attach your name to something that obviously your master has written for you..,
no - she was the original snowflake...
Just another hippy slut with a big mouth. Breakout my @$$. All the feminazi hippy girls were doing it.
Bell bottoms??? Those cankles make them look like peg leg pants.
Did the Clinton campaign write this crap?
On what planet was Hillary even KNOWN in 1969?
She only became "known" in 1991, when Bill started running.
Even then, people didn't really like her much.
She was smug, elitist, and acted as though being a full-time mother was somehow something beneath her.
Baking cookies, indeed.
That's the MSM trying oh so hard to make it look like she "evolved" from previous evil conservative views, but I take what she thought as a teen with a huge grain of salt.
And those aren't bell bottoms by any stretch of the imagination.
Well, I guess if you stretch pants to the breaking point enough it does take the "bell" shape out.
I was a junior in college. I clearly remember Hillary’s Wellesley speech, dissing African American Massachusetts Senator Burke. It was reported at that time that she discarded her prepared speech to lay into him. I also remember the Life Magazine coverage of her. (I didn’t subscribe to Newsweek until the next year.) I felt at the time she had received considerable coverage. Marian Wright Edelman, according to Hillary’s own account, taught her that everything’s “for the children.”
You are exactly right. There are lots of universities. Wellesley is a university I had never heard of until Bill Clinton was elected president.
Here’s the transcript of that;

“And then respect. There’s that mutuality of respect between people where you don’t see people as percentage points”
Nah,Hillary,you see them as votes.
(Most boring speech ever.)
.
Everyone knows she the biggest rising star of her generation who was named for Sir Edmund Hillary and is a genuine folk hero whom the masses emulate and adore. Why, I'll bet just today there have been are at least ten thousand new born baby girls all across America and the world being named "Hillary" in her honor!
The media would like to have the failed Bar exam hippie have gravity and be a major player but she was still someone detested by her superiors on the watergate work she tried.
She failed as a First Lady. She rode free in the Senate with zilch accomplished. She failed in a run against an unknown. She sold the office of Sec State on an I imagined scale.
The next day, she was seen walking on water.
I know! Cankles since...Forever!
How awful to be her. Gobs of money is cold comfort when you’re in that hand basket on your way to Hell! *SMIRK*
