If the killer is a Muslim, the dispute may be a Shia vs Sunni tribal thing. They have been after each other for thousands of years, each claiming to be a truly devout Muslim, as opposed to someone faking it.

If you are not the right brand of Muslim, then Muslims will hate you as much as they hate Christians and Jews. My bet is that this guy didn’t agree with something this Imam said, or he was the Imam of the wrong brand of Islam.
When Muslims run out of Christians and Jews, they go after each other with the same enthusiasm.
