Then why do they refer to the attacker as "the man" rather than saying his name? Could it be because it's a name like Mohammed?

Because, in Switzerland, they NEVER refer to the name of the suspect regardless of his nationality. The do however often state when the suspect is Swiss (he is) and whether he has a migration background (up till now, no word).

After a period of time, they *may* begin referring to him by first name and initial - but that usually comes later.

The perp died in the hospital as well as one of his victims. We should hear a bit more soon.
