More rain Saturday was expected to swamp already soggy ground across Louisiana and other parts of the Gulf Coast, as Louisiana's governor announced that crews had rescued more than 1,000 people, some of whom were clinging to trees to stay safe.

Officials said at least two people had died in the floods. Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency as rescue workers in the southeastern part of the state braced for more rain. The state's emergency management office called it a "historic flood event."

In a 24-hour period, Baton Rouge reported as much as 11.34 inches of rain. One weather observer reported to the National Weather Service that 17.09 inches fell in Livingston.

My son lives near Denham Springs, and he has about two feet of water. In my neck of the wood we have no flooding yet, but the ground is soaked. It has rained every day this week. The flooding is fairly localized, not like the great flood of 1973. Now that was the worst flood of my life, all of Cajun country was flooded, and the Mississippi River nearly changed its course through the Atchafalaya River Basin. I'm praying for rain to stop.

For years, I've purchased wonderful New Orleans coffee over the internet. I tried to place an order yesterday...and after dialing for almost an hour, my call was finally answered by a lady in Atlanta who was temporarily taking orders.

She said that the Louisiana company was under water due to flooding and was shut down. She said "it's really bad down there, ma'am".

I don't know when I'll receive my order...but the wait for this coffee is well worth it...and I hope this fine company makes a timely recovery from the devastation and water damage.

I'm praying for rain to stop.

I pray it will, too. And I hope your son doesn't lose more than he has already.

I have family in Louisiana. Water didn’t get in the house. They did manage to catch some fish in their boat while cruising around outside their home. I have seen a lot of floods but this was right up with the worst of them.

How is your son today? I pray he and his family are fine. They were rescusing and evacuating all night. A family I know moved 4 times. Each place they made it to started flooding.

Can you imagine the media if Bush was on vacation and Louisiana was flooded and Milwaukee was burning?

The Florida parishes of LA are not swampland. They are low rolling countryside. Do you have any ides what 15-20 inches of rain can do? Show a little compassion for people in trouble if you can.

Yep. I was being an insensitive jerk. I thought this was happening in the lowlands.

I apologize. Wisconsin has PLENTY of flood plains, too.

I’ve just made sure to never live on one. I’ll take a tornado or a blizzard over water or fire, any day. ;)

George Bush was completely responsible for the weather that brought Katrina (had his very own weather machine!), so I’m waiting for the media (yo, Shepard Smith, where are you?) to hang this storm on Obama, he should have known it would happen and been prepared..damn him!
