Parents sue when third-grade honors students are not promoted to fourth grade
The Washington Post ^ | August 12, 2016 | Valerie Strauss

This belongs in the you-can’t-make-up-this-stuff category:

In Florida (you knew it was Florida, didn’t you?), some third-graders — including honor students — are being forced to retake third grade because their parents decided to opt them out of the state’s mandated standardized reading test this past spring.

An undetermined number of third-graders who refused to take the Florida Standards Assessment in reading have been barred from moving to fourth grade in some counties. A lawsuit filed by parents against state education officials as well as school boards in seven Florida counties says counties are interpreting the state’s third-grade retention law so differently that the process has become unfair. Test participation, therefore, is more important than student class academic achievement.

Achievement in what? All government school tests are politicized. I have no interest in that sort of “achievement” for my children. No one who has a child in government schools is truly committed to a free country.

Leave it to the Jebster to be a part of the exact wrong thing.

JEB! makes millions off of “common core” , he is involved in the test scoring business ... I had a “meet the teacher” day yesterday with my 5th grader and the entire stack of schoolbooks was labeled “common core”..

The tests are a response to the kids who graduated high school functionally illiterate, kids with A averages at graduation with 8th grade skill sets.

I agree that we have a broken system and I welcome major change. The only problem I have is people wanting change as long as it doesn’t ask for them to do anything. A private system would be great, a tiered system would be wonderful, a system that sets high standards and allowed students to rise to the challenge or re-evaluate their future employment outcomes is to insane to dream about. I do get tired of reading discouraging comments from fellow conservatives about how terrible I do my job and how easy I have it.

I agree, however, what you say makes my point. Education is just a symptom of a deeper problem. Conservative Christians, like myself, have stood by and allowed our country to sink to this level. Please understand, I am blaming you and the rest of the Freepers just as much as I blame myself and all of the Christian Conservatives I know. It is my fault and all right thinking citizens’ fault for not standing up and stopping this nonsense a long, long time ago. We may be to the point, as others have suggested, of doing away with the entire idea of public school and starting over with something new. Maybe it is even time for individual states to secede from the union and have two separate countries. I am sick to my core when I think of what my country has become.

Doesn't The Wagner Act of 1935, modified by Taft Hartley make allowing the unions the default position? I realize that the Right to Work provisions of Taft Hartley allow states (most recently Scott Walker's Wisconsin), to opt out of MANDATORY union membership. That does not mean that the National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers and similar administrators' unions do not have plenty of Marxist members who join voluntarily. Part of the ongoing revolution, don'tcha know! Preparing the next generation of Marxist robots who will become the voters who serve the US up to its enemies on a silver platter.

Sure, there are a relative handful of informed and patriotic teachers slaving against all odds to actually deliver an education to their students. FR's own Verga is one of them. They better not tell their union bosses that they are patriotic, however, or that they dare make a stab at competence. John Dewey and Horace Mann would roll over in their graves if ANY gummint skewel teacher tried such "professional" heresy and treason against the union bosses and ideologues.

Religion and prayer and any positive mention of God is banned (unless god is Allah). Actual Judaeo-Christian morality? Likewise.

I used to live in suburban Connecticut until we moved to very rural northwest Illinois. Not that we would normally touch the stuff (one year of eldest daughter when she was to far along as a homeschooler to be in an available and acceptable private school. She whined until we let her have one year of gummint skewel to teach her and (through her) her younger siblings just what horrors they were missing. She then did two years of community college in Texas and then private universities. By the time she went to P.S. 666 for that one year, her morals had long been formed and the basic matrix of her actual education completed so that she was able to successfully disagree in class weith her teachers, prove her case, and win.

Stop trying to lay the manifest failures of gummint misedjamakashun on the parents. Their only serious crime (if they are normal middle class parents who love their kids and their country and their faith) is turning junior over to the educrats and modern day Comprachecos who distort not the kids' bodies but their minds and their souls.

Gummint skewel teachers and administrators demand and get obscene compensation, perks, pensions and what not despite the obvious degeneracy of what passes for education in their gulags. If that's not true in your town or school system, it is in most. Not to speak of ideological and factual distortion and propagandizing the kiddies.

You will also note that I mentioned that parochial schools are now being infiltrated by failed public school union teachers introducing guaranteed academic failure via Common Bore and its lies. In our time, if you want anything to go right, you must learn to do it yourself and muster the commitment to do so.

If you think the evil is limited to big liberal cities or New Jersey, go, as I did forty years ago to an NEA national convention and an AFT convention and browse the exhibit halls to see what sort of evils those unions have in store NATIONALLY.

Here in FL, each county has its own school board and superintendent of education, all publicly elected officials. They even have taxing authority on property owners...........

every parent is told their children are geniuses by teachers

I wish my teachers hadn't done that. They blew my "I can't understand" excuse for not doing homework right out the window.

About the worst thing you can do for a genius kid is tell them they're a genius. Removes all incentive for them to work hard or try to understand a concept they don't natively grasp. I've made a very deliberate effort as I homeschool my daughter to never tell her "You're so smart", but instead emphasize that she worked hard to get the right answer.

My mom used to let me think that scoring 99% percentile on standardized tests meant I'd missed a few answers and could do better.

Eisenhower coined the expression, “military industrial complex”.

You have perfectly described the education-social welfare-complex. The whole rotten system employee millions of people.

One of the major reasons that so few churches run private schools is:

1) They minister's spouse works for the government schools.

2) In most counties the government school district is the largest single employer with the largest payroll in the county! No other business comes close. Add to that the vendors to the schools and their employees. Even my dentist and his 5 employees depend on government school dental insurance funding a major portion of his practice. So?....What minister is going to bite the hand putting money in the collection plate.

I was a classroom teacher and worked my way up to principal. I taught English and Literature for the teaching part of my career and have been an administrator since that time working in grades kindergarten to twelfth and alternative schools. Education has changed in the twenty years I have been an educator and not for the better. When I first started my career I enjoyed teaching Literature and challenging my students to reach for the stars. Sadly, now I work to challenge them not to kill each other and to work in a legal industry.

I agree the testing is very flawed; the problem is that without any standardized testing parents just have the teachers’ words for it that their children are doing well.

Employers and parents beg to differ; they are not just passing illiterates, but giving them good grades...

Definitely; to me the best employee screen is a simple essay (one paragraph) that gives me a great handle on whether or not a candidate is even literate...

That is why the life of leisure guaranteed the welfarians requires them to breed; they produce clients for the education-social welfare complex, and are “paid” to do so...for 50 years it has been the chosen “career” of many.

The federal government has made it clear that it won’t tolerate secession; the fact is that one of those two countries would desperately need the assets of the other to provide every basic necessity and do all the real work.

I think attendance as a criteria for diploma[s] went the way of the dodo bird. Now, I believe it depends on which protected class one finds themselves in. All others that are not in one of the protected classes have to earn their diploma.

Right; there is now a verifiable difference between a “white/Asian diploma” and a “black/Hispanic” one - and the same applies to college degrees.
