Mary Knowlton arrived at the Punta Gorda, Fla., police station Tuesday night to learn how to be a community steward.

The 73-year-old was there as a student in the citizen police academy, a two-hour course intended to give an intimate look at what makes the department in the quaint Florida town work.

On this night, the group of 35 would tour the station and talk with officers, an essential part of academy curriculum that has gained popularity across the country amid a heated national debate about police violence.

Note to everybody: Don’t role play with the cops.

RIP, Ms. Knowlton.

Shooting an innocent old lady? Cop can put that on his resume and get a job with the Atlanta Police Department.

Without looking any farther, I’m guessing a Glock.

The department will pay out a bunch of (taxpayer) money.
The officer will resign, only to be quietly re-hired by another police department elsewhere. He’ll then be able to collect two nice pensions in retirement.

I don’t have any live rounds anywhere near my work area when cleaning my firearms. And these clowns were using guns in condition 1 for a safety demonstration? Incredible.
The best comment I recall from the first thread: remember this the next time some `goo goo’ tries to lecture that only police can be trusted with guns.

“Let me guess. The cop unloaded his weapon by racking the slide and THEN removing the magazine. There shouldn’t have been even one live round in the building if shoot/don’t shoot simulations were planned. Not. One. Live. Round.”

There shouldn’t have been even one functional gun in the room. You DON’T role play with real, functional guns.

If you're using simunitions, you have ONLY converted weapons and simunition cartridges available, and EVERYBODY checks EVERYBODY to make sure of it. This whole thing was and is inexcusable.

My 16 year old son is in the local Police Explorer program. This week they had an active shooter training...he came home with a shot from an air soft gun right in his throat. He laughingly said,”Trigger finger Brittney”(girl in the program) was role playing an officer. He was the victim-ran out yelling help me, help and she shot him immediately. Good thing it was air soft guns!!

I can not imagine why real weapons would be used in any kind of training or demonstration. The chances of things not going perfectly are always high.

Absolutely. Should have been blue handled guns or rubber duckies. In the military they don’t even issue a crate of live rounds if they issue blanks. They have to be totally separate deliveries. To have this happen is 100% inexcusable.

Remember folks: Policemen are highly trained - more than any average firearm owner. THEY will be the only ones allowed firearms under another progressive regime.

"Tuesday night, Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis called the shooting a “horrible accident”..."

Nope, horrible negligence, and I'm sure the courts will agree when they are presented with the lawsuit. Remember, if this were you or I that did such a thing, even with no malicious intent at all, we'd be charged with manslaughter or negligent homicide. Different rules for the cops apparently.

Was this the officer involved???:

According to the article posted yesterday, she was shot multiple times. Unless there were multiple idiots, it doesn’t seem like he even bothered to remove the clip. Also, he KEPT FIRING.

The 1st Law: The Gun Is Always Loaded

The 2nd Law: Never Point The Gun At Something You Are Not Prepared To Destroy

If you’ve done your safety-check and are absolutely sure that your gun is unloaded, that does not give you the go-ahead to be careless with it. Remembering the first rule, The Gun Is ALWAYS Loaded, you should never point it toward anything that you are not prepared to destroy.

Let me see if I understand what was going on here.

The police department was conducting a program to convince the public that the police do not unnecessarily use deadly force.

Hmmm... I think the program needs some work.

There is absolutely NO excuse for this. The cop in question is a incompetent idiot and should be no where near a gun.

Why would there be live ammo in a demonstration class?

A good question. I think I heard (TV) that they were expecting to use blanks for realism. But blanks don't have that copper-plated hollow point. Doesn't anybody inspect and clear their weapons anymore?

Huge settlement coming. Well deserved, except for the fact we pay for it.

Blowing away Grandma in a demonstration is not good community outreach.

Been to the range with those in enforcement? They wave guns around and take weapons off the firing line with rounds in the chamber (unloading them when they are behind others). I am not surprised at this at all. How many who join the force have actually grown up around firearms or previously passed an NRA safety course?

When you have a careless system, those "snap decisions" are generally careless.

I have a Walther P99 airsoft gun. It feels and operates almost exactly like the real thing (without the sound). The slide even cycles when it is fired. If you want realistic simulations, you use something like that. Of course, as others have stated every single actual firearm and round needs to be removed from the scene first, before you do anything.

Why even use blanks? Blanks can kill and injure too.

“Unless there were multiple idiots,”

I believe there was only one ‘shooter’ but there were multiple idiots.
