I think Trump is counting on landing a knock-out punch in the debates. I wouldn’t do that if I were him. GOPe quislings are already consorting with Democrats to slant the rules against him. And frankly I think Hillary is going to find reasons to beg-off anyhow.

Think SuperBowl ads..most people paying attention. Why spend all your money now before the debates, before people start focusing on the election? Look at the polls, you have 15%+ undecided. That's the difference between landslide and defeat. Hillary has a penchant for blowing up and blowing it. The leaks about her health, her mental instability will go viral, despite the MSM. Which by the way is becoming viewed even to the average mouthbreather unreliable and viewed in the tank for Hillary. Trump will really pound her with money(TV ads) when the time is right. I am not holding out for miracles here, but I do know and whispers are coming out, about very serious stuff that will be devastating to Hillary. Not your normal complicated email this and that. Trump knows this also and will go with it and really dispirit her supporters and flip the undecideds. He does that now and she has time to recover.

I did look up the data and yes in 1980 and 1988 the situation looked much more grim for Reagan and George Bush senior at this point. In fact Reagan was a lock to lose till about 7 days out and then those undecideds began to flip to him in record numbers and the polls turned upside down and well the rest is history.
