More VW cheatware 'found

US watchdogs have found three pieces of so-called emissions cheatware in Volkswagen's three-liter diesel engines, according to German Sunday tabloid Bild am Sonntag.

The dodgy code, we're told, lifts limits on engine output after 22 minutes of operation – that's rather convenient because air pollution tests by regulators last just 20 minutes.

It's alleged this means the turbocharged direct injection engines in Audi's Q7, Porsche's Cayenne and VW's Touareg models deliberately and temporarily lower their performance so they can pass America's strict eco-friendly tests in labs – and then pump out chemicals to their mechanical hearts' content in the real world. There are about 85,000 cars on US streets with 3.0-liter VW engines in them.

In July, VW promised to cough up nearly $15bn to buy back vehicles after it admitted it used US emissions test cheatware in its 2.0 liter diesel engines. Now it's under fire for its 3.0 liter engines.

VW's engineers tweaked around the expected testing. Other car companies did it right and lost sales (Mazda's SkyActiv diesel came slightly shy of meeting California emissions, so didn't debut here).

I am not a fan of regulations, but government is supposed to assure an even, informed playing field for business and consumers to work within. There should not be favorites, and both customers and consumers should be able to sue from being defrauded.

I’m sure they didn’t intend to do anything wrong. No reasonable prosecutor would pursue this...

On these new diesels, the "after treatment" emission package is as big (and costs as much) as the engine. Lots of long term added costs in there.

VW has cancelled production of diesel engines for North America.

Smells like something a democrapic politician might finagle for a little back-handed payola.

Sadly, that is exactly what that Mazda SkyActiv didn’t need. They met US emissions but not California without all that extra crud, and then realized that they just couldn’t compete against VW’s “technology” in the small US diesel market.

Other countries have it, though.

VW is paying for it. I’ll get to choose between about $7,000 paid to me to fix mine or a cash payout about $1,000 shy of what I paid for the car to sell it back to them. Cheapest car I ever owned. Not sure about all the buy back details. What I’ve heard is you turn the car into a 3rd party representative, but don’t get payment immediately. I’m sure VW dealers will have a handy way to apply $$ to a new VW. I’m car shopping right now, but hard to find features/benefits (and especially mpg) in the price range.

If they pull diesel’s out of US, not sure I want to lose 10-15 mpg for another Passat.

VW told me BMW diesels have the same issue but it’s not a big publicity problem. Anyone know anything about BMW or other good diesels?

The assumption here being no one else is doing this same cheat. Kinda like Lance Armstrong. The playing field leveled by cheating just like every one else. But hey I passed the test!

This is so gay. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with these cars except for nutty US laws.

Pretty simple answer: either test properly, or get rid of the regulation. The university that found the “cheating” tested properly under real world conditions. The official government testers did not. For that they need to be fired.

Our government is hell bent on delivering us back to the Stone Age.

I go to work and we have toilets that need to be flushes three or four times. My new washing machine barely uses any water and when we wash something black it has to be hand rinsed to get the remaining detergent out.

I drove about 1100 miles last year through Germany, Switzerland, France and the Czech Republic in a Volvo V60. After about the first 8 hours of driving I started to think the gauge was broken as I still had more than 1/2 a tank left. That car got amazing mileage! Yeah, as a turbo diesel with a small engine it was a bit sluggish but when it came to fuel efficiency, it was mind blowing.

On a side note, we bought a 2016 Audi S5 last year and it has been a great car. We drive a lot and at 20k there have been zero issues. Interestingly it’s electronically limited to 155 top speed. Who pulled that number out of their a**? Not that I plan on getting it up there but is 155 really much safer than 160 or 165?

Sigh.

Cheers.

Cheating is a serious violation and they deserve to be fined. However, as it turns out, there are other car companies which also cheated to pass emission standard. Such widespread violation make me wonder if regulators set up a standard too high for current technology to meet.

Yep. It'll be interesting to see where this spreads to, because there are a number of 3.0 V6 turbodiesel engines out there - all with performance and fuel economy specs nearly identical to VW's. No way that's mere happenstance.

LOL, I see what you did there.

I can’t wait to see the state Supreme Court justice again who worked with Comey 10 years ago in Washington, who told a roomful of people I was in a few months ago that he believed Comey would look at the evidence and follow the law.

On the 155 thing, I suspect that is a combination of available tire ratings and operating under U.S. tort law.

It sounds an awful lot like CONGRESS the way they operate.

Pass a piece of legislation, load it up with pork and wild eyed spending on useless crap, then tell the American People you passed the Affordable Care Act and you can keep your doctor while saving thousands in premiums.

I suspect it was mainly the DPF that they were trying to ‘protect’ by having it run ‘part-time’. The thing would likely crap out very quickly if it ran full-time, and the expense of replacing it every 2 or 3 oil changes would more than offset any fuel economy savings.

They were great cars regarding global warming (due to their sipping of fuel)...but getting them clean enough to make Los Angeles happy on a bad day simply wasn’t humanly possible - so no more diesels (at least low-end diesels) for Americans.
