Trump’s Campaign Focused On Attracting Unlikely Voters, A Memo Shows
FiveThirtyEight ^ | 08/05/2016 | Clare Malone

Posted on 08/05/2016 1:07:23 PM PDT by MaxistheBest

Most presidential campaigns spend their time and money appealing to people who vote regularly in elections. Not Donald Trump. According to a Trump campaign memo obtained by FiveThirtyEight, the campaign pursued a highly unorthodox strategy of courting unlikely voters during the primaries, focusing on people who rarely participate in GOP primary elections. The campaign relied on free media, including Trump’s frequent TV appearances, to turn out regular voters, according to the memo.

But survey and voter data shows that Trump won the Republican nomination thanks in large part to Republicans who typically vote in general elections, not by bringing people entirely disconnected from the electoral process to the polls. As Trump heads into the general election, the campaign’s thinking during the primaries, and the ad-hoc process by which it built an operation to target and reach out to voters using data, may offer clues about how it will approach voter turnout in the fall. Trump’s primary success does not necessarily mean that he can win the general election with a similar strategy.

“Based on an internal analysis of our own modeling data and third-party research, and considering the exceptionalism of our candidate, I advise that we put one-hundred percent of our organizational effort into enfranchising the conventionally low propensity voters that support our candidate,” the memo from former Trump campaign staffer Matt Braynard begins.

------------------------------------------------------

“These are voters who do not think ISIS can be defeated with hashtags and do not think that the solution to BLM [Black Lives Matter] murdering cops is for cops to do a better job listening,” Braynard said. “Pat Buchanan, I think, accurately described these people as conservatives of the heart — these are law and order people who are rich in the wisdom of the Old Testament.”

You needed a memo to figure out Trump is targeting disenfranchised and disillusioned voters? Have you not been paying attention to his entire campaign?

Just over 50% of eligible Americans vote.

If he can tap into just half that number, it would be a landslide.

Trump is smart, real smart, and his strategy of reaching out to people who do not vote is brilliant.

And that's was the media's job....and they performed...every day 24/7.

While I always vote, I have never sent a dime until Trump came along. (I do St. Jude)

It’s a smart strategy. There are millions of people out there who haven’t seen anyone who seems to represent their interests in many years, and thus haven’t been voting. My only worry is that these are also unfortunately not the most civic-minded of people, and thus the need for a “ground game” to make sure that they actually get to the polls and vote. Some will do it on their own, but others will fail to register in time, or just forget to go on Election Day. In the meantime, the Dems will bank most of their LIV’s via absentee ballots filled out by organizers weeks before Election Day.

The unlikely to vote could be a great resource to draw on if we can get them to the polls. I wonder if there is an organized effort to register them and get them out on election day?

The article tries to play it down, but I remember watching all those primary rallies and the interviews the MSM did; there were always people saying they were first time voters.

This is where the lack of a ground game could be a problem, but I do think he can win this way. For good or ill in most states the democrats have made it very easy to register and vote. In many places you can register at the polling place on Election Day. You can vote by mail and you can vote at the dmv.

Traditional non voters are usually ignored, but for those of us in Minnesota this is not new. This is how Jesse Ventura got elected. He was a celebrity who ran against the establishment. The biggest difference between Ventura and Trump is Ventura ran as the Independence Party Candidate and Trump is running as a Republican. Trump has to convince people who have hated the whole system for years to vote for a “Republican”. Or he needs to convince them his is not really a Republican without losing 25 to 30 percent of the Republicans. It’s tricky, but doable.

Reaching out to non voters is smart. Focusing 100% of your effort to reach out to non voters is not brilliant, It’s suicide.
I hope Trump is smart enough not to take the advise that is given in this memo.

He is already losing 25 to 30 percent of Republicans. He needs to win independents, and about 90 percent of Republicans to win this election.
He is already winning with independents, so he needs to focus on the Republicans he lost.
They are guaranteed voters. They will be voting for someone.

Who would that be? Clinton?

If they truly value their principles they will vote to stop Clinton by voting for Trump. Their public hand wringing and whining about Trump serves no good purpose. No good purpose at all.

If the Electoral College observes the will of the people they allegedly represent, Election night will be delicious, with exploding heads on every news channel, news anchors breaking down in tears, and perhaps an unplanned projectile expulsion of the hot hor devores.

Haven’t posted in years but here it goes:

In 2010 580000 people voted in Maine -LePage got 218000 votes. In 2014 616000 voters, LePage 294000 votes. Granted in a midterm year you can go after general election voters but the mindset for Trump should be the same. Flip voters in the 2012 voter universe, then add to it.
I think there are 17 battleground states, with a 2012 voter universe of 53 million. About 30 million eligible non-voters.
Within the 14 million Trump primary voters there should be enough volunteers for a good voter id program. Between 4-8 pm we completed 40 surveys per caller in Maine. If there are 100,000 VOIP phone lines up and running, the Trump campaign would get the voter id done by Labor Day.
The next phase, as has been suggested, is to bank voters. For strong Trump supporters, mail them an absentee ballot application. Have a good AB chase program. And you can also identify which republicans are on the fence.
How many republicans, right leaning independents are in the non-voting group? Even if it’s 15 percent, that would go a long way for victory.

Best comment on FR in months. We are people who move frequently and are not registered at our new address.

So we honest people can’t vote.

But back at our old address the establishment local incumbent will see to it that someone votes on your behalf where you are still registered.

One result of HAVA is that registering to vote at a new location is now just about the only way to get taken off the registered list at the old address.

Where/Whatr is the Trump campaign plan to overcome reality?

********************************************

Maybe, or maybe they will go third party. It doesn’t really matter, if they are not voting for Trump.
My point is that Trump is bleeding Republicans.
We can all call sit around and call them names, which this site does very well.
However, it doesn’t change the fact that we do need their votes.
