Trump asks why US can't use nukes: MSNBC
CNBC ^ | 03 AUG 16 | Matthew J. Belvedere

Posted on 08/03/2016 7:57:25 AM PDT by DCBryan1

Donald Trump asked a foreign policy expert advising him why the U.S. can't use nuclear weapons, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough said on the air Wednesday, citing an unnamed source who claimed he had spoken with the GOP presidential nominee.

"Several months ago, a foreign policy expert on the international level went to advise Donald Trump. And three times [Trump] asked about the use of nuclear weapons. Three times he asked at one point if we had them why can't we use them," Scarborough said on his "Morning Joe" program.

Scarborough made the Trump comments 52 seconds into an interview with former Director of Central Intelligence and ex-National Security Agency Director Michael Hayden.

Scarborough then asked a hypothetical question to Hayden about how quickly nuclear weapons could be deployed if a president were to give approval.

"It's scenario dependent, but the system is designed for speed and decisiveness. It's not designed to debate the decision," Hayden said.

Hayden was CIA director from 2006 to 2009 during the George W. Bush presidency. He was the National Security Agency director from 1999 to 2005, spanning the presidencies of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

CNBC reached out to the Trump campaign via email and was awaiting a response.

Good question. Why can't we use low yield nukes? 1-10kt neutron bombs would be great on ISIS strongholds. I'm surprised the Russians didn't use any of their micro nukes in Syria. They probably didn't because their thermo baric bombs are so big and effective.

Reasonable question. . .explore the entire military inventory and examine nukes. . .why and under what conditions may the be used, and why not in some cases.

We are NOT prohibited from using nukes.

Yes, the usual anti trump bozos were having a twitter meltdown over this, continuing the “unfit” narrative that Trump cant handle nuclear weapons.

Not the smartest thing to say in a close election, IMHO. I don’t disagree with the question, but most of the voters will have visions of Hiroshima & Nagasaki in their heads.

Of course, we can. We should have nuked mecca and Islamabad on 9/12.

But waiting for the ad with the girl and a daisy. Trump will blow up the world.

Practical reason would be radiation fears, and the US has some pretty good fuel-air bombs. It’s a reasonable question. If the fuel-air bomb would do what is needed, why open the Pandora’s box of radiation fears (regardless of the actual dangers).

They have discussed small nukes for underground bunkers.

Your enemies have to know that you are quite capable of doing what needs doing.

It's a damn good question, one I've been pondering since the 1980s. I don't agree with the conventional "wisdom" that any use would lead to complete annihilation of the world.

If Trump is serious, though, I suggest for him better questions:

Why can the US test nuclear weapons? Why can't the US build nuclear weapons?

If it is to be an effective deterrent, the enemy has to believe you will use them if you deem your national security is at risk. It has been the reason why the US has never signed on to the idea of “No first use.”

For years, doctrine called for nukes to be used in Poland and East Germany when the Russians broke through in Germany.

Why not use them against the passes on the Afghan/Pak border?

The MSM wants to give the impression that the nuke launch button is under the desk in the oval office and Trump will be nervously tapping on it.

My question is - is there a reason why this is happening now, as opposed to in the Fall? Are they trying to inoculate against some coming development, or is that just normal? It seems to have ramped up... Maybe it is just due to the beginning of the general election

Trump wants to 1) Obey the law and 2) Know his options.
