I hear a lot more crowd noise in the DNC convention than in the RNC convention. Perhaps dems are noisier ... maybe ... but I actually wonder if it is intentionally done by the networks to make the dem convention sound more exciting than the RNC convention.
To effect this is just a matter of turning on mics on the floor vs only using mics on the podium ... or changing the setting / type of the podium mics to unidirectional rather than hypercardiod.
