'Left Behind' Author Tim LaHaye Dead at 90

Author, pastor and prophet Tim LaHaye died of a stroke on Monday. He was 90.

LaHaye was perhaps best known for his Left Behind end times series with co-author Jerry B. Jenkins.

"Thrilled as I am that he is where he has always wanted to be, his departure leaves a void in my soul I don't expect to fill until I see him again," Jenkins said. "The Tim LaHaye I got to know had a pastor's heart and lived to share his faith. He listened to and cared about everyone, regardless of age, gender, or social standing. If Tim was missing from the autograph table or the green room of a network television show, he was likely in a corner praying with someone he'd just met—from a reader to a part-time bookstore stock clerk to a TV network anchorman."

I’m sure he’s hearing, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

RIP....but you should have stopped at book 1 or 2. They (the publishers, not co-authors) got progressively WORSE as the money rolled in.

According to his obituary:

Joining Dr. LaHaye for most of his journey was the former Beverly Ratcliffe, whom he married on July 5, 1947. Mrs. LaHaye—a powerhouse in her own right—founded Concerned Women for America in 1979, the nation’s largest public policy organization for women with 600,000 members.

Their union prompted Time magazine in 2005 to name the LaHayes “The Christian Power Couple.” The proclamation came as the magazine named Dr. LaHaye as one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America.

Early in his ministerial career, Dr. LaHaye pastored churches in South Carolina and Minnesota before moving his family to California. They settled in San Diego County, where he took the reins of Scott Memorial Baptist Church. Under his 25-year leadership, the congregation expanded to three locations, including what is now Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon.

Dr. LaHaye also founded two accredited Christian high schools, a school system of 10 Christian schools and what is now San Diego Christian College (formerly Christian Heritage College). In 1972 he co-founded the Institute for Creation Research with the late Dr. Henry Morris.

As a couple, the LaHayes hosted a radio show and, later, a TV program called “The LaHayes on Family Life.” In keeping with their faith, the show promoted Christian values.

During the 1970s Dr. LaHaye was instrumental in gathering a coalition of Southern California pastors together to address a progressive agenda that was undermining traditional family values. Also in the ‘70s, he encouraged the late Jerry Falwell Sr. to establish the Moral Majority as a way to build a similar coalition nationally. He was also widely credited with garnering evangelical support behind the campaign of George W. Bush.

Besides co-authoring the 16-book “Left Behind” series—which sold more than 80 million copies, topping the best-selling lists of The New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, and Christian Booksellers Association—LaHaye was a prolific non-fiction author, penning 60 different titles that sold 14 million copies in as many as 32 languages. Topics he explored included family life, temperaments, the biblical view of sex and marriage, Bible prophecy, the will of God, Jesus Christ and secular humanism.

Other ministries he either founded or co-founded include Tim LaHaye Ministries, the PreTrib Research Center and the Tim LaHaye School of Prophecy at Liberty University. He also designed the LaHaye Temperament Analysis, a self-improvement tool that has been used by more than 30,000 people.

LaHaye is survived by his wife Beverly, four children; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard LaHaye; and a sister, Margaret White.

Agreed. Such a comfort for his family to know beyond all doubt that LaHaye has joined our Creator. I'll look forward to meeting him some day.

I had no idea he was quite that old. I tried to read a few of the books some years ago, but I just couldn’t follow the writing style at all. The books helped a lot of people though.

Not a fan at all of the very dicey theology pushed by his books. And I must respectfully but strongly dissent from the word “prophet” as a descriptive. But I am sorry to hear of his passing. RIP and prayers for his family and loved ones.

La Haye was also a pioneer in Christian circles in popularizing the battle against secular humanism in classrooms (The Battle for the Mind”) and recognizing a positive aspect of psychology in identifying different personality types (”Spirit-Controlled Temperaments”). He was a trailblazer in more than one area. Plus he helped get young-earth creationism started by helping Institute for Creation Research in its formative stages. You may not agree with everything he taught, but he was an innovator and pioneer. And all of this is on top of him founding a huge conservative Bible-believing church in San Diego.

“prophet” or “profit”?

TIM LAHAYE brought an awareness that THE END is near. The LEFT BEHIND series made theologians give REVELATIONS another look.

I checked to make sure it wasn’t in the “Religion” section, so I’d consider it fair game. The guy cashed in on a specious set of literature (kudos), but calling him a “prophet” was a little much, even for me.

He taught a Bible study at a Church I attended decades ago. He was a very nice, personable guy. Sorry to hear he is gone.

From a Virginia pastor’s facebook page:

“Another spiritual giant on earth is now in heaven. His writings greatly impacted my life. I also had a couple of personal and life changing conversations with him. Thankful for his investment in Liberty University. He took care of his body and his body took good care of him for 90 very fruitful years of ministry.”

I agree, except the very last one got really, really good in places. But agree, the middle several were not good.

Mike Huckabee’s facebook post:

One of my spiritual mentors and a true giant of the Christian faith, Dr. Tim LaHaye, has passed away at the age of 90. He suffered a stroke just a few days ago and died today. What a life! What a legacy! And what a living example of faithfulness to the end!

Dr. Tim and his dear wife, Dr. Beverly LaHaye, to whom he has been married to since 1947, have been the ultimate “power couple” in Christian circles for decades. He is one of the most prolific authors in Christendom, and his books truly helped change the lives of millions. And Bev launched Christian Women of America and grew it into the largest grass-roots activist organization in the nation.
I first personally met the LaHayes back in the late 70’s, but got to know them well in the early 80’s. I kept a stack of books by the LaHayes in my office during my days as a pastor 30 plus years ago, and would often give them to people going through various challenges and make the reading of their books a part of the therapy for spiritual and emotional healing. His “Left Behind” series that he co-authored with Jerry Jenkins, launched a stunning bestselling franchise that touch untold millions with the urgency of Biblical prophecy.

When I started my political pursuits, the LaHayes were among my earliest supporters and encouragers. They remained faithful through the 2016 Presidential race. Loyal friends. Not the kind who see if there is someone getting more attention and who might bring more attention to them—just faithful friends until the end.

There will never be another like Dr. LaHaye. He had a gentle manner about him, but was a dynamic teacher and speaker. He was one of the most intellectually curious people I have known, and he never stopped learning, growing, and advancing. The influence he has had on me personally and professionally is simple profound and permanent.

I’m deeply saddened by the news of his death, but I’m filled with the joy of knowing that he is with the Lord and experiencing the reality of all that he has helped others to believe and know.

Thank you, Dr. LaHaye—I won’t tell you goodbye. Just goodnight—we’ll see you in the morning!

Tim LaHaye, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
April 27, 1926-July 25, 2016.

Lord, thank you for Tim LaHaye, for his ministry and faithfulness to the gospel of Christ and the promised, biblical, premelinnial return of Christ.

Bless his family and comfort them with the sure knowledge that he is now, and will aways be in the presence of You, and the Lord Jesus Christ for all eternity, and that they will once again be reunited with him. I ask this all in the precious name of The Lord Jesus Christ, amen.

Maybe it was a really small rapture that only included him.
