If you notice the trend, this is happening everywhere. All modern governments are Ponzi schemes. The only way to keep the game going, and not get caught, is to bring in new players.
Also, prosperous, intelligent and free-thinking citizens are difficult to rule. A little chaos in their lives helps make them more compliant.

At least the Europeons can now sympathize with Israel with what they have to put up with on a daily basis.
