No, a wall or fence alone will not end illegal immigration. But a wall or fence, along with more patrols, and more enforcement in the interior (also against people who overstay visas) will reduce illegal immigration, and drug trafficking.

Until re-unification, East Germany pretty well had the situation in hand. Physical barriers along a border work going both directions.

Physical barriers are force multipliers. They are part of an integrated defense system. This NYT article is just another worthless attack on Trump.

Much easier to patrol a long distance if there is a substantial wall.

The wall will stop 80% or more of the border jumpers. That will bring a good percentage of the illegal entry problem under control so the US Border Patrol can deal with it.

Fences (walls) make good neighbors. Respect for property rights is not only common sense, it is a preserved American right.

The entire article is disconnected - each point disconnected from the last.

BUT -> it's worth suffering through this paragraph just to enjoy the final line that some editor inserted at the last minute, surely so the Times could get their Paid Content check from Obama ... This paragraph actually makes sense ... and then it gets blown up by a Social Hypnosis line ...

"It is telling, though, that Mr. Ladd never used to carry a gun or a cellphone. That changed six years ago, when his friend Robert Krentz Jr., known to help people no matter their nationality, was shot to death on his family’s ranch after radioing his brother that he had come upon another migrant in distress. His unsolved murder caused a national outcry, and it led to state legislation intended to crack down on illegal immigration. It also prompted Mr. Ladd’s wife to demand that he carry a cellphone and a Glock.

But, really, what is a Glock going to do?"

Hmmm ... what possible good could a gun be when you're alone out in the wilderness and your friend recently got shot and the police are 2 hours away and drug cartels are running around. What' POSSIBLE good could a gun be, I mean "But, really, what is a Glock going to do?" Personally, I love that line.

Well of course there must and will be patrols and more border patrol officers hired. Charges that to Meh-he-co too! All those American companies that are saving billions by making products south of the border will move back or pay too.
Cheaper products mean nothing to someone out of work.

I have read some mockingly say all you will need is a ladder or rope to get over a wall. Where are the example of wall planned?

When the NYT stops using passwords for computer access, and locks on doors, and the executives there stop locking their doors at home, then they can start preaching about how useless deterrence is. Until then, they act like Paul Ryan and I will continue to ignore their advice on how to live my life.

They are going to have to add in Semitic equipment to detect the tunnels too. Stop the watering stations. And the catch and release. There has been no slow down, it’s gone underground and with the catch and release stats are off.

Who said that a wall ONLY will stop illegal immigration? It surely will not but it can delay entry sufficiently for patrols to interdict and arrest or turn away illegals.

The idea a properly constructed wall of sufficient height and depth beneath the ground along with the use of the available technology cannot slow to a trickle illegal border crossings is just plain ignorant thinking.

And just what makes these ranchers on the border experts in what will and will not work?

A wall is to deter the less committed and to slow up the one’s that do climb over. . .the wall climbers are detected by sensors and Border Patrol Agents are able to respond and intercept.

That is SECURING the border.

When there is talk of securing the border pay close attention because the left will switch the term from “secure” to “seal,” and no border can be sealed.

The key is cracking down on illegal labor and sending illegals home. Even when they get into the legal system, illegal aliens use administration policy to thwart execution of the law.

Agreed, not even the Great Wall of China kept out all invaders, but it certainly did its part to mitigate those who tried. Its like those who rail against abstinence because young girls are still getting pregnant. But, it is arguably valid to say that abstinence works every time it is tried.

This is the typical template game to imply anything will not work 100% so why even try. Like Krauthammer on Friday IMPLYING that Trump said “I will stop all crime” which he did not even come close to saying it like Charles said. Trump correctly said he would RESTORE law and order. Is it a stretch to say that we had at one time in our recent life’s experiences some level of law and order to be restored to?

One of my duty stations was Ft. Huachuca, Arizona from 1974-1976. One of our sections was the test and evaluation for sensors and aerial detection. Granted, most of it was designed for battlefield purposes, but we used the border as a test range. That border was only 17.5 miles line of sight from the airfield that was home to 6 OV-1 Mohawks. Some could say the Mohawk was the turboprop US Army predecessor and mission equivalent of the A-10 Warthog. We used them to fly patrols and also to drop the sensors for us to test since they were not only and attack aircraft, but intelligence capable as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q78zfc4oLes

In the area from Nogales to Antelope Wells (NM) our sensors were not only used for testing, but also for border enforcement, but even that did not stop it all.

The insinuation that just a wall will stop it is ridiculous on its face, but as a first line of deterrent with all of the above, we can stop ALMOST all of it.There will be breaches, but just like the Berlin Wall, some will risk everything just to try. It just depends on just how desperate those wanting to cross are and also just how the responsive agencies are in developing new ways to augment where weaknesses have been found from those.

Funny how the East Germans and the North Koreans figured out how to keep people *in*.I’m optimistic that a properly designed, built and staffed wall can lower the flow into the US from the hundreds of thousands to the dozens.

This has always been the ultimate libtards “argument” ....

After you are a “raaaaaciiiisssst” , we can do nothing against uncontrolled immigration !

So let it be ..... and let’s go full speed to the brave new “global world” , with a big big ( non democratic ) government
