French Kings were once protected by “The Scottish Guard” which I think numbered 100.
It is given a lot of discussion in the historical novel “Quentin Durward” by Sir Walter Scott.
Not Scottish but Swiss. The Swiss Guards heroically defended the palace to the last man.
