McAuliffe begins to grant voting rights for convicted felons individually after court ruling

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Saturday he’s already begun restoring the voting rights of convicted felons one-by-one, after the state Supreme Court rescinded his executive action granting voting rights en masse to more than 200,000 people convicted of serious crimes.

“Last night I instructed my staff to comply with the court’s order and individually restore the rights of the more than 13,000 Virginians who had successfully registered to vote following my April 22nd executive order,” Mr. McAuliffe said in an email to supporters. “Soon they will have their rights back and will be able to have a voice in their society once and for all.”

Mr. McAuliffe, a Democrat and longtime ally of Hillary Clinton, said he’s also ordered his staff to start working through “the entire list of more than 200,000 Virginians whom we have identified as eligible to have their rights restored according to the criteria I have set.”

Maybe McAwful should require Hillary loyalty pledges from the felons as a condition to their restored voting rights.

It will be dismissed, I agree.

But for now the process of investigation is underway.

But, as you imply, Hillary was thoroughly investigated... and exonerated.

Wait .... I thought the court decided against him in the article I read recently, and even in this one.

???? Am I getting it wrong?

The only way he can do this is to pardon their felony convictions. I am not sure that Virginia allows their governors to blanket pardon anyone. IIRC, Most states have a procedure which requires that there be a hearing and that the victims are granted a right to be heard before a pardon is issued. Isn’t there a board of Pardons in Virginia?

Sorry, I was a bit off.

The system that local courts use to restore gun rights is the same. So any felon that is allowed to vote can petition to have his gun rights restored. They’ve no other set standard than going off of executive action.

So the local courts will most likely grant a restoration.

That may be true across the entire 200,000, but I think among the 13,000 who registered already, it is much higher.
I know of three Trump votes and no Hillary votes.

Not quite. Virginia governors can serve more than one term as long as the terms are not consecutive. Miles Godwin served two non-consecutive terms in the 60s and 70s.

Not a good argument. STATES RIGHTS as embodied in the laws of the states, must be preserved. The governor should not be allowed to go against the people. He needs to obey Virginia’s laws or try to get them changed. He is NOT King!

He is a scumbag. Almost every felon knew they would lose many rights/privileges before they were convicted. The majority have been arrested a dozen or more times before they g0t in the big leagues. These are not the types to pardon, reduce jail time, give this to etc. Leniency is a sign of weakness to them.

He is not doing it legally. The court several times mentioned that a felon must ask to have his rights restored. None of these felons have done that. He is just granting rights restoration to anyone who registered to vote after his blanket restoration.

They need to petition for rights restoration before he can grant restoration. They have not done so. These orders will not stand either, but at least the orders will be public documents and will have the names of the persons restored on them. Wait for the news stories and the lawsuits over who they are.
