Germany on Friday stressed its promise to protect its NATO allies after White House hopeful Donald Trump called the commitment into question.
The German government is fundamentally committed to Article Five of the NATO treaty. That is the central promise of solidarity within the alliance, Chancellor Angela Merkels spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters when asked about Trumps remarks.
Collective defense according to Article Five is and remains the main duty of NATO, Seibert added, noting that the pledge had once again been renewed at a NATO summit this month in Warsaw.

Germany has become the Colonel Klink of Europe. They can’t even handle their own affairs; not about to worry what they think.
Don’t underestimate Rheinmetall, EADS, ThyssenKrupp and the rest. They’ve been selling to foreign nations, especially the Middle Eastern countries (particularly Saudi Arabia) for a long time; it would not be much of a shift to focus on production for any EU military that surfaces.
Trump never said he was against that.
He just said they needed to step up and do more on their own too.
And he’s right- we cannot foot the bill for defending the whole planet.
“What troops do the Germans plan to use? They spend all their money on the illegal immigrants they support.”

You’re not kidding. I remember reading about five months ago that Germany expects a 6 billion euro budget surplus...and commits it all to giving aid and comfort to the refugees. Not one euro for the German citizen!
Any objections were quickly squashed.
They’ve been running 27 other countries (now 26) through their proxy in Brussels. Sun Tzu’s book always noted that one has to beware countries with that much power that play dumb.
That’s not the bill that’s breaking the USA either way, once it’s separated from all the domestic socialistic spending; the latter is the millstone that’s dragging US defense spending down, never mind the cuts that Obama and his predecessors have engaged in plus the social agenda polluting the military right now.
Germany needs to grow a pair ... might be “problematic” with Merkel.
I say allow Poland to re-establish the Commonwealth, they’ll take care of that part of the world.
Yeah, Lithuania sending combat troops to Afghanistan? Well, never mind.
Oh, I forgot to add: where were you when those troops’ blood was on the ground? (I don’t agree with that rhetorical trick, but the paleos use it a lot).
exactly-they have zero room to talk
the money they spend on Saracen barbarians could purchase the finest military in the world.
Despite the growing threats, many European countries still resist strong measures to strengthen NATO. Many remain reluctant to increase military spending, despite past pledges. Some, like Italy, are cutting back. France is reverting to its traditional skepticism toward the alliance, which it sees as an instrument of American policy and an infringement on its sovereignty.

Afghanistan is in the North Atlantic?
Oh sure. The Slimes is always my go-to source for such things.
What a stupid question—please let me reply with a smarter, directed one: do you recall the U.S. having an interest in Afghanistan over the last decade or so?
What Germany’s military capacity is going to be used to defend other NATO countries? Are they planning on sending their million man mob of homicidal maniac Muslims refugees to fight? The German military is a joke because of the international communist creeps running their country.

Great! Then let it happen! So we can get the hell out of the Eurozone and rebuild our own damn country.
There are no muslims in the Baltics and won’t be as these countries don’t pay luxurious welfare.
And the paucity of Muslims there may keep the Kremlin from occupying any Baltic territory, if recent history (hopefully) is a guide.
Personally, I would like to see NATO and Russia reaching a full co-operation status, in the world we now face, we have common enemies and common values. If it comes to an us against them final showdown, the us should be all who are threatened by imperial Islam and China for that matter.
I can’t really fault Putin for wanting to restore Russian parts of Crimea and east Ukraine to the Russian federation.
Putin has also shown far more common sense in his approach to Syria than any of the NATO countries.
He should keep his hands off the Baltics though. They have been through enough in the past century.
Other than that, much of the antagonism between NATO and Russia is a counter-productive diversion, and I bet Trump sees it this way too. Gingrich, perhaps not so much, but he’ll come around if Turkey gets too frisky with the Plan B Caliphate.
