Ted Cruz Pulls A Ted Kennedy From The 1980 Democratic Convention
Huffington Post ^ | July 20, 2016 | John A. Tures

Posted on 07/21/2016 9:48:16 AM PDT by johnatures

When Ted Cruz refused to endorse Donald Trump in his Republican National Convention speech, he channeled his ideological opponent, Ted Kennedy, whose bitter primary fight with Jimmy Carter made him dodge the opportunity to raise hands with his opponent. It cost Carter the 1980 election, and might do similar damage to Trump.

It was not the lack of Kennedy's blessing that cost Carter the election, it was the Carter administration that did it.

I think more blame can probably be laid at Reagan's feet for costing Ford the election in 1976. It was a fairly close race, and seeing Ford almost lose the nomination of his own party cannot have helped.

But, I guess it worked out in the end. Ford was a RINO, and Jimmuh was such a failure it made Reagan a shoo-in.

He didn't pull off a "Reagan" either...

In the aftermath of the speech, Heidi Cruz had to be escorted by Virginia delegate Ken Cuccinelli from the convention hall, ostensibly for her own safety.

It irritates me that the Cruz camp keeps trying to say Heidi was in danger. The key word here is "ostensibly" because nobody did anything to Heidi.

The other lie I'm sick of is that Trump attacked Heidi during the campaign. Trump never attacked, he always countered. The Cruz campaign employee went and got the nude Melania, gave it to Cruz's PAC and plastered them all over the net. Trump put up one photo of the two women side by side and Cruz cries.

Cruz's lies need to just stop. Well, I guess he took care of that last night.

I don’t think this guy was even born when Carter was president.

Carter lost because he had to face Ronald Reagan.

It cost Carter the 1980 election, and might do similar damage to Trump.

Not really a valid comparison. Carter in 1980 was pretty much seen as a failure by many people. Polling put him ahead of Reagan but as we all learned in November those polls were pretty much fabbed BS from a media doing all it could to end Reagan. Teddy K's convention antics didn't really make that much of a difference as the Dem base was already in disarray (remember how many Dems became Reagan Dems - certainly Teddy K supporters were not moved to vote Reagan by Teddy K's speech!).

This go-round, there is contention in the GOP base, certainly, but Trump has 80+ percent support among the party, while Carter was (as it turned out) closer to 60 percent support from his party.

It is important to not alienate those (like myself) who once supported Cruz, but I think many Cruz supporters are very disappointed in his actions. In reality, Cruz' speech was pretty spot-on in many ways, but it could and should have been a rousing statement of support for Trump-Pence at the end. The fact it was not is a disappointment.

I can maybe understand the hurt feelings (on both sides) but politics is a big-boy game, and both sides should be wearing their big-boy pants and moving on from past disagreements. The fact Ted cannot yet bring himself there is a sad testament on a man that showed many admirable qualities in the past.

Well Ted Cruze made it very clear this morning why he did not endorse Trump.

But he went as far as he could. And if you read his speech very carefully. He said for Republicans to vote their conscience and for the candidate that's going to to uphold the Constitution.

And there is only one candidate that even comes close. And it sure ain't Hillary.

I don't think it's comparable at all either.

Carter beat Carter. Period.

Kennedy didn't and couldn't change the fact that Carter was unpopular.

As to Reagan/ Ford, yes, Reagan's speech outshone Ford's, but that picture of him shaking hands with Ford was very telling, and classy.

Reagan would get to the WH in only 4 more years, but he didn't destroy himself in 1976 like Cruz just did.

Imagine Hillary winning and being Carter-level unpopular in 2020.

Cruz could have set himself up nicely big-time if he had been classy.

He could have had a shot in 2020 if so.

Now he doesn't.
