Lindsey Graham calls on Trump to clarify NATO dedication statement

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham urged Donald Trump to clarify his position on defending European allies after a New York Times article quoted the GOP presidential nominee as not fully supportive of the NATO alliance treaty.

“Statements like these make the world more dangerous and the United States less safe,” Graham, R-S.C., said this morning.

“I can only imagine how our allies in NATO, particularly the Balkan states must feel after reading these comments from Mr. Trump,” Graham said. “I’m 100 percent certain how Russian President Putin feels – he’s a very happy man.”

Trump, in a New York Times interview today, broke from standing U.S. foreign policy in suggesting the U.S. wouldn’t defend its NATO allies, including the Baltic states against Russian aggression. He cited them not fulfilling “their obligation to us” including through adequate military spending.

Graham called on Trump to correct his statement.

It’s simple. No money, no protection. Freeloaders take notice.

If that's his view then the U.S. should just drop out of NATO and be done with it.

Baltics, not the Balkans...

The Baltics does have a strategic position as they can deny Russia entry into the Atlantic from the Baltic Sea.

Though they should pay up, and one of of them do - Estonia has the 4th highest defence budget in Nato measured against GDP.

LOL. If Linda had something to say he should have said it in Cleveland. At least Cruz had the balls to commit Sepouku.

‘He cited them not fulfilling “their obligation to us” including through adequate military spending.’

So the U.S. counters that by refusing to commit fulfilling their obligations under Article V. Makes sense.

Clarification: Linda was inadvertently left out of the original statement. Trump will not defend Linda against a primary challenge.

Lindsay must be jealous of all the hate that Ted Cruz is justifiably receiving. He wants a little for himself.

Lindsey Graham and others should be investigated as accomplices for aiding and abetting murderous terrorist jihadi groups in the Middle East. Lindsey Graham, et al., are the ones who should be answering questions.

It was a very ill judged comment by Trump.

This time Lindsey Graham is correct.

Actually Trump did not go far enough. It is long past time for the United States to unilaterally withdraw from NATO. Let Turkey be the main pillar.

Expect more of this from the other bitter ex-candidates. TRUMP will rise above them all.

Sorry, Eurotwit, you're entirely mistaken.
This shows how deep Linda has her head stuck in for the Left and Commies for the UN.

No. Trump expects the European freeloaders to put some skin the game. America supplies the men and materiel defending Europe while the other 27 NATO countries and the UN observe, sitting on their thumbs, criticizing the US.

Screw them. It's their continent to defend. Quite frankly, Europe is capable of defending themselves. If you don't thinks so, take a look at what Germany alone, was capable of doing leading up to WWII.

So true, he and Johnny M are allowed to skate on this one.

Also, Hey Mr less than 1 % support during your run.... we don’t need to listen to anything you have to say. Some of us are old enough to know that you let Billy Jeff off the hook on one of the article of impeachment...

On that I agree with you.

I still like a NATO treaty, but the Europeans should become partners instead of welfare clients.

The American total dominance was understandable in the decades after ww2 when Europe was devastated.

Now, the EU economy is larger than that of the United States.

Obviously we should pay our fair share.

I just think such matters should be handled internally in NATO, not in an interview with the NY Times.
