Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Wednesday that the U.S. wouldnt necessarily defend other NATO countries if they were attacked by Russia.
In an interview with the New York Times, Mr. Trump essentially said the U.S. would not abide by the military alliance, one provision of which declares an attack on one to be an attack on all.

Yes. It rejoined about 7 years ago.
In the article he is referring to the Baltics, not Turkey. Turkey has the second largest fleet of F-16s in the world.
We defend the Baltics because we are keeping them from being sucked into a new Soviet Union, the ambition of Putin. They are tiny countries without the means to defend themselves against a belligerent Putin.
This is how we ended up invading Iraq the first time — a diplomat hinted that we wouldn’t defend Kuwait if Iraq were to invade.
Trump REALLY shouldh’t have said this. Is he trying to get crooked Hillary elected?
We could lose the Baltics to Putin if he says this as President.
Winner, dumbest post of the week.
Well with the Clinton Foundation, we now share the status of a Mafia ruled Kleptocracy.
That is spot on.
Appears to be trumps first shot across the bow relative to the traitors in NATO.
Whatever Trump thinks at this point is subject to change because he is about to start getting national security briefings from the CIA and the NSA.
While what you say is absolutely true, the world has radically changed. And the m.o. of the Marxists-communists has radically changed as well. They went West my son, and scrapped iron curtains and watchtowers for universities, governments, financial markets, media, and entertainment. The former only controlled the body while the latter affects the soul. And the one thing that stands in their way is the cross of Christ. In the East, where guard towers once stood, churches and crosses now stand. While in the West where churches once stood we see B & B’s and Muslim refugee centers. In the West we see crosses being removed from national monuments and cemeteries honoring our war dead (expurgating their, and our, Christian identity— “who-whom”). Russia has become the enemy of West because it defied the NWO and after throwing off Marx began to once again embrace Christ.
The world has changed since 1949, when NATO was founded.
When NATO attacked Libya without provocation, I knew it was finished.
If we are smart, we will cultivate Russia as a friend, not an enemy.
Trump is visionary in this approach.
I agree. It does seem reasonable to me too. Done of these countries need to step up as prescribed Ib the alliance’s agreement. I think countries are to spend 2 percent of GDP on defense.
No one has apparently read Trumps book from the 80s, Art of the Deal?
When a businessman like Trump begins a negotiation, he starts out by asking for way more than what he expects when the deal is finally consummated. His approach to the NATO Treaty is no different. In this case he is starting to renegotiate the NATO Treaty. He knows that if he doesnt start out acting as though the US is going to withdraw from the treaty, the cheap a$$ bastards in the rest of NATO will continue to let the US pay the lions share of the cost of keeping NATO going.
That may or may not be true, but any poster that thinks the Cold War was fake, and existed only to profit defense contractors, needs a mental health checkup. The USA and Russia have NEVER been “natural allies” dating back to Czarist times.
Haa Haa Haa, Those non-paying NATO countries will be sending US checks by the time Trump’s sworn on. Brilliant.
I believe Trump was speaking of Turkey. If Turkey picks a fight with Russia—Trump wouldn’t back up the dictator of Turkey in any fight. As well he shouldn’t.
I hope you’re not directing that a me. I’ve been to and lived/worked close to the Berlin Wall when it was quite real and active. How about you Pubbie?
The post was directed to you, but the reference in it was about the poster I originally replied to. That poster made the assertion about the Cold War. Go back and read post Number 10.
The stupid, it burns.
Lithuania sent combat troops to Afghanistan, does that count for anything? And what makes you think we (the U.S) are mercenaries?
