Conservatives to Cruz: Time to back Trump
Politico ^ | July 20, 2016 | Katie Glueck |

Even some diehard loyalists say he needs to set aside lingering bitterness and get behind the GOP nominee.

They volunteered for Ted Cruz, gave him campaign money and still adore the Texas senator.

But now it’s time, say even some of his longtime loyalists, for Cruz to finally endorse Donald Trump.

Cruz, who will address the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, remains one of the GOP’s most prominent holdouts, refusing to back his presidential primary rival even as most other Trump critics have come around — if only with their noses plugged.

He may give a definitive endorsement, but I doubt it’s sincere. If he was truly sincere, he would have given it weeks ago when it was obvious Trump would be the nominee.

No, what he’ll give is on the same level when your parent makes you say ‘I’m sorry’ after a fight with your sibling, and you’re not one bit sorry. You’re doing it only to avoid a worse punishment.

I backed Cruz months ago before backing Trump... but if Cruz sabotages Trump in any way I - and millions like me who now back Trump - would wash our hands of Cruz forever.

Just like we're doing with the other quislings - Jeb and Kasich... I wouldn't vote for Jef or Kasichh for dog catchers... Trump won fair and square - everyone needs to put on their big boy pants.

Originally supported Cruz as the Conservative Constitutionalist. Was a bit excited. Donated hundreds. Then the attorney politico egotist came out. Sorely disappointed. No more lawyers, please. Expecting little tonight.

“I believe he will give a great speech and endorse Trump. It will make a lot of conservatives mad...”

If some Cruz supporters are angered by Ted’s endorsement of our nominee, they’re no conservatives. Cult members, maybe, but not conservative in the least.

Are you kidding me? Trump’s agenda is the most conservative we’ve seen since Reagan. Any so-called conservative who rejects that, is working for the other side.

If Hillary wins, you will have amnesty for 40 - 50 million illegal aliens.

In addition, the witch will bring in millions of additional third worlders from the Middle East. Africa, Central America and Mexico.....millions more registered voters.

If Cruz thinks he can win after 50 million+ third world “immigrants” become citizens and voters, he is in need of a mental evaluation, because he is effin’ crazy.

VP would have put him in position for either 2020 or 2024, if only he had not been so determined to go to the mat this year. I think he was, at one time, the VP pick that Trump was looking for, and because of how he behaved, that pick became Pence, who is very similar but not stupid. That he didn’t see how well he would have been served to work with Trump instead of fight him tooth and nail makes me question his wisdom and his narcissism.

“No one gives a speech without it being vetted. So it isnt like the RNC and Trump doesn’t know what he will say, and they are just playing this up to get people to talk about it.”

Unless Cruz lied to them about what he will say. Given his recent history, I would not put it past him.

I hope, for his own sake, that he will endorse Trump and expresses his unconditional support. This is his last chance to redeem himself.

+1. He can win with our support and he’s not Hillary Clinton.

Agreed. If he’s not careful, he could end off the wind up off the end of the spectrum with Glenn Beck.

The only thing that might salvage Ted Cruz’s political future at this point is if Trump is elected and his term is widely perceived as a disaster. I just don’t see that happening, so Cruz has very likely done himself in politically.

Some conservatives I talk to on another forum are constitutional conservatives and will have none of Trump it is as if they could care less that Hillary is elected. The speech tonight I hope mends some of those feelings. I also believe that most Cruz supporters will vote Trump, not all but most, and if that is the case and Trump has a good crossover vote from democrats in the North East and the swing states he may win some blue states. Could be wishful thinking but there is that chance.

Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves. — Winston Churchill

Speaking as a former Cruz supporter, I absolutely will vote for Trump. I may get flamed for saying so but I had already decided I would support Trump if he was the nominee and was very unhappy with the way Cruz behaved toward the end of his run. If I had it to do over again, my primary vote would go to Trump.

I really doubt the conspiracy theories about Cruz trying to undermine the Trump campaign so he can run against Hillary in 2020.

Ms. Unruh and is a hardcore Cruz supporter whose antics at the convention could have been stopped in their tracks by one phone call by Cruz. It appears that that phone call never happened. I think I can safely discern Cruz’s attitude towards the Republican nominee.

The non eligible Cruz (sorry Cubanadians aren’t eligible) has delusions of being a World/globalist savior, an idea fostered/installed by his nut-case father. Sour grapes don’t look good on anyone. Not even hanging from Cruz’s halo. Lying Ted is a moniker earned on his merit, not bestowed by a political opponent.

But to answer your question....I doubt that President Trump will lift one finger to help Cruz in his re-election bid. Cruz is a big boy. He thinks he’s presidential material. As such does he need anyone’s help?

I think he has made his own bed and will have to sleep in it alone. He has repeatedly crossed the line. He could hardly then complain in not receiving Trump’s support in an off election year even by the well known generous and forgiving man Donald Trump.

Trump truly loves America. There is o other agenda in him other than doing what is best for America. That alone precludes ever supporting Cruz.

I'm sorry, but such people are so stuck inside their preconceived notions of Trump that they're literally, functionally blind.

Trump's background, his character, his policies, policies he's supported in the past, his personal achievements, executive experience, business successes, his family, his ability to overcome adversity, his love of country, his willingness to say what normal politicians never do, his dogged determination to fight for what is good and right, and yes - even his many warts -- all have been under a microscope and vetted with a fine toothed comb, over the last twelve months.

What on earth have these so-called 'conservatives' been doing over the last year? Good Lord, Trump's platform is the most conservative we've seen since Reagan.

The fact is that Cruz utterly disgraced himself in the last few weeks of the Presidential Campaign.

His graceless refusal to concede defeat since have only added to the picture many of us have built up of the man - a corrupt, globalist only interested in his own career and furthering the interests of the establishment.

Right now, myself (a former donor to his campaign for the Senate) and many others are completely finished with him.

If he offers a full-throated endorsement of Trump tonight, throws himself heart and soul into defeating Hellary and stops his creepy side-attacks, there may be some chance for him to come back.
