Considering I pay around a third of my income in taxes I have/will be performing 15 years of "service".

Only a third?

Consider yourself lucky

His heart may be in the right place, but can you imagine what the Democrats would turn a “National Service Year” into? For a start, “community activism” and BLM would probably count.

My thoughts exactly. When almost half my income is outright stolen, I believe I have given more than my fare share of service.

The man is an advocate of gun control and an endorser of Democrats, and I don’t agree with his proposal of national service, but I see nothing in the piece that says explicitly that such service should be mandatory.
Not that I’d be surprised.

Stanley: sometimes the best service you can provide is to be quiet.

More enslavement of the American citizenry. And for what? Meanwhile the Islamonazi Invasion continues as fast as O and his sold-out GOP-e co- conspirators can rush them in here.

I've been saying it for decades - draft men and women to serve for two years - military or "peace corps" service - and all time served must be in a third world country.
I guarantee that 90% will return home and never once complain about living in America.

Yeah, just a little involuntary servitude. That’s awesome.

Hasn’t this already been done with the CCCs and the WPA (We Piddle Around)?

Stanley A. McChrystal, another of our modern low talent Generals that knows best for everybody else. I sure as hell ain’t sending my kid to serve under a putz that presides over a war that drags on for 15+ year and claims how brilliant he is.
And I ain’t sending a kid to scub toilets in some community center in Baltimore or Ferguson. Go be a dictator somewhere else Stanley. Take Wesley and Petraus and Mullen with you.

I actually don’t have a problem with this. I would like to see successful completion of national service as a prerequisite to voting, getting a government job, holding office, or getting federal assistance of any type.

This could be a minimum 2 year hitch in the military, with an additional 10 years as active reserve status or civilian service for 3 years. There should be a wide choice for civilian service — foreign missions for a church, a modern day CCC, working for a State forestry or land management bureau, a county redevelopment agency, a hospice, childcare in an inner city day care center — really anything to improve the nation and community. Direct federal program as a last resort.

“A year of service has the power to bring young people together from different races, ethnicities, incomes, faiths, and political backgrounds to work on pressing problems facing U.S. society today.”

Hillary or Obama could have written this. This is pure community organizing. just in case anyone makes the mistake of wondering how Generals view the citizens. They see you as raw material for whatever they desire, and have high disdain for you running your own life.

Rather than compel (or strongly encourage) Americans to perform some kind of national service for two years, I’d prefer to see an American leader (military or civilian) stand up and simply call for Americans to take more responsibility for themselves and their families.

In a free society, nothing should be mandatory other than obeying just laws.

I believe in military conscription but not this. I would probably help the birthrate though as I am sure all the suburban girls pulled into national service would soon be having the rates of out of wedlock births as their sisters in uniform.

Generals and admirals are make effective military leaders but dangerous politicians. Our founders understood this when they established civilian authority over our armed forces. Of necessity, the military is a socialistic society in which all the basics of life are provided so that all energies may be devoted to training and fighting. Most flag officers view this artificial universe as normal — along with their juniors’ unquestioning deference and obedience to their authority and commands. With rare exceptions, a free society should not entrust such men with the reigns of political power, at least until they have proven over time to have embraced free markets and the strict Constitutional limits on the role of our armed forces.
