His heart may be in the right place, but can you imagine what the Democrats would turn a “National Service Year” into? For a start, “community activism” and BLM would probably count.

Exactly. Like those college professors who compel their students to be little Red Guard ‘volunteers’ on the professor’s hobby horse agendas.

Agreed. Taking productive people out of the workforce to do various civil projects is a greater waste.
A better solution is saying if you’re on welfare/SSDI and semi-capable, you’re picking up trash on the side of the road or parks a couple hours a week. Yes, this requires tying mandatory contraception to welfare benefits, which we should do anyway, so that someone can’t say I can’t work because there is yet another baby.
Want SSDI because you’re depressed at an inability to find work? We’ll have you cleaning public venues for money instead.

It isn’t service if it’s forced. That is slavery and has no place in a free country.
