KANSAS CITY, Kan. - A Kansas City, Kansas, police captain has died following a shooting early Tuesday afternoon, according to multiple sources.

Chief Terry Zeigler originally tweeted that an officer had been shot at 22nd and Haskell.

"According to police, officers responded to a shots fired call at about 1:30 p.m. One person was taken into custody, reports KSHB. As an officer pursued more suspects, more shots were fired, and the officer was hit.

Several suspects are not reported in custody.

I am as pro-cop as anyone on this site, but we have to be careful interpreting all harmful encounters by cops as the war on cops. Surely those ambushes were, but cops are assaulted every day in America. Internet news makes it appear worse than it is, and three cops out of the hundreds of thousands out there working at any time, is statistically zero. Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn presented the department’s Purple Valor award to Officer Brandon Baranowski, who remained hospitalized Tuesday after he was shot by a domestic violence suspect over the weekend.

Photos shared by the Police Department online show Flynn at the hospital with Baranowski, who was sitting upright in a hospital bed and had a cast on his right arm.

Baranowski, 31, was wounded in the arm and chest when he was ambushed about 2 a.m. Sunday while responding to domestic violence calls in the 3500 block of S. 17th St.
