Sowell: The Dumbest Idea
Creators Syndicate ^ | July 19, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

If there were a contest for the most stupid idea in politics, my choice would be the assumption that people would be evenly or randomly distributed in incomes, institutions, occupations or awards, in the absence of somebody doing somebody wrong.

Political crusades, bureaucratic empires and lucrative personal careers as grievance mongers have been built on the foundation of that assumption, which is almost never tested against any facts.

A recent article in the New York Times saw as a problem the fact that females are greatly under-represented among the highest rated chess players. Innumerable articles, TV stories and political outcries have been based on an "under-representation" of women in Silicon Valley, seen as a problem that needs to be solved.

Are there girls out there dying to play chess, who find the doors slammed shut in their faces? Are there women with Ph.D.s in computer science from M.I.T. and Cal Tech who get turned away when they apply for jobs in Silicon Valley?

Are girls and boys not allowed to have different interests? If girls had the same interest in chess as boys had, but were banned from chess clubs, that would be something very different from their not choosing to play chess as often as boys do. As for chess ratings, that is not subjective. It is based on which players, with which ratings, you have won against and lost to.

Are women and men not to be allowed to make different decisions as to how they choose to spend their time and live their lives?

The original idea of ‘righting a wrong’ also had a place. The problem is there wasn’t a time limit put on it. We disagree on this issue - that happens some times.

“The original idea of ‘righting a wrong’ also had a place.”

No, it did not.

The first reason for that is that you cannot right a wrong done to dead people by dead people. The truth to tell, they weren’t even trying to right a wrong. The sole purpose of Affirmative Action is to humiliate and harm whites and the United States.

The second is that it is never, ever morally acceptable to attempt to assist one person by wreaking a terrible wrong upon another, innocent person. Doing that on a large scale is just that much worse.

The third is that the wrong done to American Negroes that put them in their current situation was not slavery, but Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” and subsequent socialist atrocities.

The attempt to “right that wrong” by ruining the lives of millions of people, only a tiny fraction of whom have ancestors that owned slaves in the first place, is stupid and evil.

Affirmative action was and is a ghastly waste of human capital, an evil act of tyranny, and quite frankly just another con job by the enemies of all that is good.

First, I was talking about Jim Crow - not slavery. I’m with you on that part - can’t ‘make it better’ with people who are dead. Second it’s late and I’ve been watching the convention with a granddaughter who’s a Sanders fan... (She does a better job defending his positions than any adult I’ve spoken with... smart sweet child who I love dearly) But lots of questions. Lots. So I’ll get back to you later... sleep well...
