WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential contender Donald Trump called on Wednesday for the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, describing her as mentally unfit after she lambasted him in a series of media interviews.
"Justice Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me," Trump said in a Twitter post. "Her mind is shot - resign!"
The New York billionaire chided Ginsburg, 83, for criticizing him this week and expressing concern for the country's future if he is elected in November.
Trump said it was inappropriate for Supreme Court justices to weigh in on political campaigns. He told the New York Times on Tuesday that he thought it was a disgrace to the court and that Ginsburg should apologize to her colleagues on the bench.
Trump was not alone in the rebuke. In an editorial on Wednesday, the New York Times urged Ginsburg to uphold the court's tradition of silence in political campaigns.
"Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg needs to drop the political punditry and the name-calling," the editorial said.
The Times said there was no legal requirement that Supreme Court justices keep silent on political campaigns, but it expressed concern that Ginsburg would jeopardize her own commitment to impartiality.

Donald didn’t clear it with Orrin Grant Hatch: That settles it, Ginsburg stays!
Ginsburg would jeopardize her own commitment to impartiality.
This woman is mentally ill. Has been for years on the bench. She is a bias Supreme Court justice and she should get the hell out. Trump is right, retire from the Court.
Trump for President.
Something about Ruth Bader Ginsberg has always reminded me of Gladys Ormphby.
I just can’t quite place what it is.
We have to read for a while before we get to the real issue: the inappropriateness of a SCOTUS justice making any comments at all about a presidential election. It’s not about “criticism.”
So Trump’s been the only one to speak out about Ginsberg’s extreme bias and unethical behavior
Where’s the GOPe? Where’s the bar associations?
Imagine Scalia saying this in 2008
It is possible that her cancer has recurred. She may be letting her mouth run because her time is short and she knows that she will not be impeached. Her legacy as a Supreme will stay intact and she will die on the court. So she does not care.
Think of all the damage she’s done over the years with her partisan views.
There’s a lot of hate in those eyes...and being on the bench way too long. It’s killed her objectivity plus she’s too old. She needs to retire.
Another vacancy would be swell.
She’s an old Lush.
Probably true on the cancer suggestion. She’d be on med’s as well....and likely to say some things that you’d typically hold back.
As an ACLU lawyer she supposedly fought for civil liberties but once she got on the court she set about making decisions that took away civil liberties.
This is so great. Any other cuckold Republican would stand by and let her spew hatred without defending themselves. It is so refreshing to see a candidate that will take anyone on.
“Theres a lot of hate in those eyes...”
A lifetime of evil is catching up with her. Just like Bill Clinton looks sickly and frail, the same is happening to Ginsberg. You can only do evil for so long until your soul is dead and the eyes are hallow.
If Hillary Clinton has any decency which of course, she doesn’t, she would thank Justice Ginsburg for her support and then remind her that political advocacy is totally inappropriate for a USSC justice.
Good. This ugly-a$$ shriveled up old hag needs to be sent out to pasture.
And that would be (hopefully) a Republican president’s pick.
