As Japan's population shrinks, bears and boars roam where schools and shrines once thrived
LA Times ^ | July 10, 2016 | Julie Makinen

The red-roofed temple at the top of the hill closed about a decade ago, and now Yoshihiro Shibata can’t even remember its name, though the 54-year-old dairy farmer has lived in this picturesque village all his life.

All across Japan, aging villages such as Hara-izumi have been quietly hollowing out for years, even as urban areas have continued to grow modestly. But like a creaky wooden roller coaster that slows at the top of the climb before plunging into a terrifying, steep descent, Japan’s population crested around 2010 with 128 million people and has since lost about 900,000 residents, last year’s census confirmed.

Now, the country has begun a white-knuckle ride in which it will shed about one-third of its population — 40 million people — by 2060, experts predict. In 30 years, 39% of Japan’s population will be 65 or older.

If the United States experienced a similar population contraction, it would be like losing every single inhabitant of California, New York, Texas and Florida — more than 100 million people.

The demographic implosion is coming for China, and finally the US as well. While most people, and especially progressives, believe in the fallacy of Malthus, that population will always increase unless checked by starvation and war, the opposite appears to be true. The inevitable trend of modern society, in which parents are not dependent upon their own children for their retirement, is a demographic implosion.

The article is trying to shame them into accepting mass immigration. Japan will just automate everything. They’ll be fine.

An interesting factor in this decline for the US is that as more people move to the larger cities, and rural areas continue to thin out, the conflict between urban political views and rural and semi-rural areas will become even sharper. Since the population distribution difference is becoming greater between states with larger urban populations and primarily rural states, and given that every state has 2 Senators, conflicts in Congress will no doubt become even more extreme.

Funny how they don’t import hordes of muslims like the west does with the same dilemma...

Japan’s poulation has almost doubled since World War 2.

With such mountainous geography they are packed tight.

True on both counts . I have lived in Japan since 1985 . Take a country smaller than California which is 70% mountainous , with a population of 127 million people , and what do you get ? Packed ...

My granddaughter and I are huge fans of Studio Ghibli. The first movie we watched was Spirited Away. Pretty much all of his movies reflect the sort of sad emptying of the beautiful Japanese countryside. We’re been watching them for 13 years now. The one best known here since it was released by Disney is Ponyo. But there are probably three others that I like better.

I agree. Japan is overpopulated, in comparison to the livable space they occupy versus other western nations. Russia has a lot of space for a population not much larger. Japan will do just fine with automation and robotics to serve their people. Last thing they need is to have barbarians stomping around their nation.

Eactly.

The Japanese thought they could build a Japanese future without future Japanese.

Don't laugh, we did the same. Almost all of our U.S. population growth for the past 40 years has been from immigrants and the first and second generation descendants of immigrants.

The potential born-American children of born-American parents have been wiped out by contraception, sterilization, abortion and buggery.

Back in 1968 Pope Paul VI said contraception could destroy souls, marriages, families, nations, and civilizations. People haven't had any idea what he was talking about: until now.

But it's still true that those who procreate, own the future.

As they say, Inshallah.

It is also due to the long depression they have been in (or were in). Our birthrate declined in the 1930s.

A guy who has lived there all his life can’t remember the name of the temple? Sorry, but when an article starts off with bs the rest of it must be bs, too.

No they won’t. Capital markets dislocations will implode the economy. You can’t run an economy when everyone wants to be a rentier and no one’s borrowing or investing. You can’t finance a modern welfare state when everyone’s retired and drawing benefits.
