A curious thing happened today with my Paypal account.

A curious thing happened today with my Paypal account. I was trying to add money to Paypal from my bank account and I got an Error message that said I cannot add funds at this time. So I called Paypal and the young lady that answered the phone apologized and told me I would need to talk to a specialist.

The specialist came on the line and informed me that I did not need to add funds to my account because Paypal would go ahead and pay whatever charges I made on my Paypal debit card and just pull the money out of my bank account automatically with no fees. Now this confused me for a second because this is not how it has worked before. Such a transaction would get charged a fee. I asked twice if there were no fees for such and he said yes no fees whatsoever.

I said OK but I still wanted to add funds to my Paypal account and he said again at this time there is no need for you to do so. I said fine but I still wanted to add funds and he said "well our system to add funds right now is locked because of terrorist activity" And btw that is an exact quote. I wrote it down and I asked him to repeat it twice.

I tried to get further info and he said that was what he was told by his supervisor.

So anyone else having any issues with Paypal or any other online banking systems due to "terrorist activity"...?

At first I didn't think much about it. But the more I think about it the more paranoid I get.

I haven’t had to login since eBay divested itself of ownership of Paypal.

Apparently we can still pay for stuff through them - I just did.

I closed my PayPal because of their policy in N. Carolina over the transgender bathroom issue.

I use my Paypal Debit card often because I get 1.5% cashback on every transaction. It adds up.

No big surprise but sorry about the inconvenience. The cyber world is a perilous place and we are just pawns in the war.

Yeah, I’ve had some similar, but not same issues. Primarily with my attached accounts.

My biggest problem is not with PayPal, but hackers sending a vast number of emails looking just like PayPal correspondence asking to update account info.

The man you talked to was correct. PayPal covers charges made to it by withdrawing funds from your linked checking (and perhaps savings) account(s) with no charge. I’ve had it done numerous times.

....sounds real fishy. Especially the “ automatic”
withdrawal from your BA....no way!....you should control all transactions!

A couple of days ago someone hacked into my Thank You rewards Citibank acount and emptied $2000 of points. They bought gift cards at Best Buy with the points. I found out about it because I got a security message from Citibank in my email stating my password and email address had been changed. I immediately called Citibank and was on hold for an hour and a half watching my account being stolen. The hour and half wait was weird. I am probably not the only person who got hacked, maybe that was why I was on hold for a long time.

Not with paypal but had another issue. I had a person build a webpage for my business and get it up and running. While she was at it and without asking, she built a facebook page for the business and one for me personally. Have no need of facebook but logged on once to see it. Logged off and the next time I went to log on, was denied and informed (by facebook) that I had to supply a photo of a government issued ID. I could block out some info but it had to have my name, photo and birth date. Could be scanned and sent. Didn’t do it and have not heard of anyone needing to do this before.
Any similar experiences?

First and foremost, yes, there's no fees for Paypal to dip into your bank account to pay for debit card charges. I've been using my Paypal card for years without a single charge, you don't need to recharge your account (for debit card usage...) If you're gifting money to others through Paypal (not the card), there is indeed a fee, but again, none for them pulling from your bank account.

Now, as to the hold. Yes, this happens frequently and has for years, ever since the Patriot Act (err, well, anti-money laundering act wrapped in a flag.) It almost always applies to the type of transaction you were trying to do (refilling an account from a bank account) where there is no associated transaction.

I've seen it localized to particular areas as well as globally - a particular pain for me as I sell CDs on eBay with customers around the world, and there's always a ticking clock for them to pay for their items. In places like Russia and Spain, many times they'll refill their paypal account and come across these holds (and I get to do a whole lot of work to help them.)

Generally, these holds last a few hours. Worst I can remember was an 8 day period in 2014 where I lost a fair amount of money due to Paypal’s holds preventing people from filling their accounts. It is always described when pressed as ‘terrorist activity’ as it is a Patriot Act hold that causes it.

Yep, received one also - forward it to PayPal but no answer back. This is over a week ago.

PayPal is just a debit card for convenience on the internet.

Yes. I had a Farcebook account for about five years. I had it to check up on one of my kids. I never used it for anything else except to read stuff. I made one single comment supportive of a local business that was being slandered by leftists and suddenly my account was locked.

They posted that I would have to provide the ID and a phone number before they would consider unlocking my account.

I told them to go jam their account sideways and give it a half-twist.

Thank you for the info. I have been adding funds to my account for years. My Debit Card account is old, I opened it the first year Paypal had Debit Cards. I am grandfathered in at 1.5% cashback on it. And I never in all that time once was stopped from adding funds from my bank.
